Job Description Summary:

PayPals Legal Team is looking for an experienced and dynamic patent attorney to join its Intellectual Property team to help build and shape its patent portfolio, counsel clients, and mitigate IP-risks. You will partner with business units and attorneys across PayPal to capture innovation and build our IP portfolio, assist in refining PayPals patent strategy, and work closely with outside counsel to manage patent preparation and prosecution. This position reports to the Senior Director, Head of Intellectual Property.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the patent portfolio and perform related activities across various product and technology areas, including invention identification, invention disclosure meetings, and strategic portfolio assessment
  • Oversee day-to-day worldwide patent prosecution and post-allowance efforts including continuations and international counterpart applications
  • Collaborate with outside counsel to manage the preparation and prosecution of PayPals domestic and international patent assets
  • Work closely with other IP attorneys in the research, review, and analysis of patent ideas
  • Engage and collaborate with PayPals global legal, business, and engineering teams to identify and protect products, projects, and services
  • Prepare and provide trainings and other presentations for internal stakeholders on IP issues
  • Drive special projects, including establishing strategies, guidelines, processes, and procedures, to enable the IP legal team to provide best in class service to its partners

Required Skills/Experience

  • JD degree with excellent academic credentials
  • USPTO Registration with degree in engineering or computer science (or USPTO registration and substantial real-world software / engineering experience)
  • 5+ years of patent legal experience in a law firm or corporate environment
  • Prior in-house patent experience preferred, but not required
  • Experience in preparing and prosecuting domestic and international patent applications and providing patentability, validity, and infringement assessments
  • Patent litigation experience a plus, but not required
  • Must be a skilled oral and written communicator
  • Creative and analytical thinker with strong problem-solving skills and capable of dealing with complex subject matter
  • Familiarity with, and strong interest in, PayPal, e-commerce, emerging payment technology and the payments industry
  • Must be able to balance legal risks with business objectives in providing holistic advice
  • The ideal candidate should have knowledge of PayPals products and services
  • Prior experience in the financial services industry is a plus
  • Strong project management skills, well organized, with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced work environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Team oriented, strong ethics and integrity, sound judgment, and ability to concisely identify solutions addressed to multiple needs
