Job Summary:

Markel is a holding company for insurance, reinsurance, and investment operations around the world. The Markel Ventures group consists of an expanding group of sixteen businesses with over $2 billion in revenues. The companies within this group cross a diverse set of industries and operate with a high degree of autonomy and a long term focus.

This position will conduct legal matters for the Markel Ventures group and, as a member of the Legal, Regulatory and Compliance Department, assist Markel Corporation with a wide variety of corporate legal and compliance matters.

Job responsibilities

Legal Support for Markel Ventures

Meet legal needs of a holding company of businesses, including advising on legal matters, drafting and negotiating policies and documents, preparing correspondence, analytical memoranda, reports and other documents as required.

Provide legal guidance on the integration of acquisitions into a broader corporate environment.

Engagement with Markel Ventures Business Units

Develop service oriented relationships with legal providers at business unit level and function as interaction point between those individuals and the corporation.

Help ensure the success of each business through defining clear and appropriate legal standards, and establishing confidence in legal compliance at the companies.

Corporate Compliance Function

Provide general legal advice for compliance, problem solving / prevention

Supervise the compliance function including the development and execution  of the compliance program;  drafting policies and procedures; delivering presentations; keeping abreast of developing legal and compliance issues affecting the corporation and its non-insurance businesses and working with other stakeholders in the organization

Legal Support for other Corporate Functions

Provide legal advice to various corporate functions and participate on multifunctional teams in support of corporate goals on a timely basis including drafting and negotiating agreements and preparing correspondence, memoranda, reports and presentations

Performance of other position-related duties as assigned

Education

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) Degree from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association

Certification

  • Member in good standing of at least one U.S. state bar.

Work Experience/Skill Set

  • Commitment to the long term success of the business, the team, our customers and communities
  • Practicing law firm, in-house, or government/regulatory attorney.
  • 10+ years of relevant experience
  • Self-motivated, ability to work independently, creative problem-solver, trusted advisor
  • Strong work ethic and high ethical standards
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills required to draft agreements, communicate legal advice and present corporate legal positions to third parties
  • Strong analytical and reasoning skills required in connection with researching legal issues, assessing impact on business processes and making recommendations
  • Strong interpersonal skills; an effective team player with the ability to work with others and to coordinate multiple complex projects simultaneously across various corporate functions
  • Business-minded; creative problem-solving abilities; and strong strategic/project management skills
  • Ability to read and understand financial statements and affinity to learn and understand the Company’s businesses and the environment in which they operate
  • Willingness to travel on a limited basis
