Job Description

The New York Times Company has an opening for an employment lawyer. This position will report to the Senior Counsel, Employment. The role will handle legal matters primarily related to human resources, employment and ethics compliance, and employee relations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide preventive, proactive legal advice on a broad range of employment practice topics, including discrimination, harassment, wrongful discharge, performance management, employee discipline and separations, workplace investigations, severance programs, leaves of absence and accommodations, recruiting, hiring, benefits, wage and hour, compensation, employment and separation agreements, unemployment and workers’ compensation, and immigration issues.
  • Working with the Company’s Talent & Inclusion Department, develop and maintain human resources policies, procedures, and other documentation related to human resources and workforce management.
  • Regularly prepare training materials and conduct training sessions regarding employment best practices.
  • Keep abreast of legal decisions, statutory changes and other developments, and advise clients on same.
  • As needed, consult on international employment issues, working with the Company’s international human resources staff and local counsel.
  • Assist with various complex and/or sensitive projects, as assigned.

Basic Qualifications:

Undergraduate and J.D. degrees from recognized institutions. Must be a member of the New York Bar.

Minimum 4-6 years of experience in the areas of employment law, with sufficient experience to handle role responsibilities with a minimum of supervision.

  • Be an effective communicator and influencer, with the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with clients, coworkers, and colleagues;
  • Have strong analytical and problem-solving skills combined with attention to detail and thoroughness;
  • Be able to weigh risks against operational needs to develop reasoned recommendations, including risk mitigation strategies, and provide sound legal advice;
  • Possess strong organizational and project management skills and the ability to handle high volume and balance competing demands; and
  • Have good judgment, a high level of professional integrity and the discretion, tact and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Experience with a unionized workforce is preferred.
