As Associate General Counsel– Global Labor and Employment, you will be responsible for assisting the General Counsel, the Compliance Committee and the Human Resources department in the management and handling of all of labor, employment and compliance related matters at Sensata. You will be a key point of contact, and have insight into, Sensata’s global labor and employment related matters and assist in developing global compliance policies, standards and procedures. He or she will perform all job duties consistent within safety, legal, and regulatory requirements as well as Sensata’s values, standards, culture and business practices.

  • Provide advice and strategic support to the Human Resources organization and business leaders across the company on a full range of employment issues, including recruiting, hiring, performance management, re-organizations, terminations, wage and hour, executive compensation and benefits, leaves of absence, internal investigations, diversity programs, employee classification and contingent workforce issues
  • Serve as the primary point person for the company’s global ethics and compliance program, ensuring that the company exercises due diligence and sound internal control to operate with integrity and protect against legal risk
  • Assist in the development of Human Resources ethics and compliance policies and procedures and compliance risk assessments
  • Ensure compliance with all labor and employment laws, regulations and policies. Advise HR with respect to the creation and operation of best in class HR programs and policies
  • Educate HR professionals to mitigate risk on key HR responsibilities, including employee relations, employee investigations, compliance with employment laws and regulations, and restructuring
  • Oversee, with HR, the Company’s Code of Business Conduct and Ethics. Assist in the development and implementation of strategies to promote an overall culture of integrity and compliance
  • Draft employment-related agreements, including employment contracts, service agreements, confidentiality agreements, non-competes and separation agreements
  • Conduct or manage internal investigations, develop investigation plans, interview witnesses, assess and document findings; oversee ethics hotline
  • Provide support to HR and other stakeholders on employee data privacy issues
  • Identify and assess legal risks and opportunities within the labor and employment area and advise accordingly; counsel management and HR on new or pending employment laws, rules and regulations, and industry trends that may impact the company and its operations
  • Independently handle legal matters and projects ranging from basic to complex; recognizing when to elevate certain matters to the attention of the General Counsel
  • Supervise, manage and evaluate outside counsel on employment related matters, including litigation
  • Educate clients and stakeholders on legal matters, policies and procedures
  • Support HR in global mobility/cross-border matters
  • Establish and maintain relationships, credibility and trust with clients, stakeholders, legal team members and other colleagues
  • Assist General Counsel with building a global HR ethics and compliance team, manage and supervise the team

Experience / Qualifications*

  • JD degree from an accredited law school and a license to practice law in any state
  • Minimum of 10 years of labor and employment experience with both a corporate legal department and a nationally recognized law firm preferred
  • Knowledge of Massachusetts and / or California state employment law preferred
  • Global employment /labor experience preferred
  • Supervisory/management experience of other attorneys or staff preferred
  • Ability to manage heavy workload in a high-pressure environment; self-starter with good business sense and a sense of urgency, honesty and fairness
  • An effective communicator and relationship builder and a demonstrated ability to persuade and influence others through collaboration across a global, matrixed organization
  • Sound judgment; ability to make clear and succinct reasoned recommendations; ability work in a matrix environment and determine who should be kept informed
  • Risk assessment skills and pragmatic business acumen, with the ability to further develop these attributes over time
  • Some familiarity with ERISA and benefit plan issues desired, including experience in supporting annual benefit plan audits and assisting internal client groups with researching plan compliance issues and responding to participant inquiries and employee benefit claims/appeals/litigation
  • Experience with compliance risk assessments and related matters preferred
