About the role: 

Cruise is looking for a Patent Counsel to grow and maintain its patent portfolio. Cruise’s employees—especially its engineers—generate significant intellectual property. This role will report to Cruise’s Patent Counsel, located within the Legal Team. The individual will grow, develop, and actively promote that generation, capturing inventions and developing high quality patents. While technical skills, experience, and knowledge are vital requisites of this role, the best candidates will demonstrate the ability to act creatively and efficiently. Because great ideas come from all corners of the company, this person will play a visible and key role within the Cruise community.

 

Day-to-day responsibilities include:
 
  • Grow and develop Cruise’s patent program by rallying stakeholders and engineering teams, including through deep tech understanding, promotions, incentives, recognition, and training
  • Strategically encourage patenting in key areas by actively maintaining awareness of autonomous vehicle progress and approach at Cruise and in the industry
  • Contribute improvements to internal and external patent guidelines and information where appropriate
  • Manage the invention intake and review process, including adapting seamlessly to various invention disclosure communication styles
  • Formulate and communicate constructive feedback and intelligent suggestions to inventors on their invention disclosures
  • Perform prior art searches to assess patentability
  • Continually optimize the workflow for patent preparation and prosecution by outside counsel
  • Keep legal and engineering leadership up to date on program status and portfolio reporting
  • Forecast and budget patent costs
  • Monitor, maintain, troubleshoot, and improve patent management software
 
You should apply for this role if you have the following qualifications:

  • Patent Attorney, admitted to the United States Patent and Trademark Office and at least one state
  • Degree in computer science, electrical engineering, or other related technical field
  • 2+ years experience
  • Experience at a law firm
  • Patent preparation and prosecution expertise
  • Software patent expertise

    • Technical understanding and interest in robotics, perception, sensors, machine learning, and automotive software
    • Mastery of a patent management software
