We are seeking a dynamic and experienced legal professional to join our team as Senior Corporate Counsel, reporting to the Chief of Legal. As a key member of our legal department, you will play a crucial role in serving as a trusted advisor and subject matter expert developing and maintaining the highest quality estate documents on wealth.coms leading platform. This person should not only be an expert in legal requirements for estate planning but also understand the intricacies of working in a fast-paced startup environment, especially working with product and engineering teams. This position offers a unique opportunity to be part of a rapidly growing company and work cross-functionally with product, engineering, marketing, sales and more teams to provide practical legal guidance and to be an integral part of developing an exciting software solution that provides the same legal rigor of seasoned estate attorneys.

Responsibilites:

    • Develop, draft, maintain and improve legal templates and workflows for the formation of estate planning documents across all 50 states and DC, including state-by-state legal nuances
    • Serve as a trusted advisor and subject matter expert to other departments
    • Provide full product life-cycle counseling, including building scalable and efficient processes, in support of creating dynamic solutions for end users, financial advisors and other fiduciary industry experts
    • Lend legal expertise to the engineering and data science teams in developing AI tools
    • Support the sales team during trade shows, conferences, sales demos and other meetings, if needed
    • Be responsive to customer questions arising from the support team
    • Write articles, blogs and other content on estate planning topics for product feature releases or general education with the marketing team
    • Stay up-to-date on laws and regulations trusts and estates, wealth transfer and tax-driven planning, to help Wealth adapt to, and capitalize on, changing regulatory environments
    • As the need arises, support the Chief Legal Officer to address legal risk in business-centric decisions, including strategic projects, contract negotiations, and product risk management

Qualifications:

    • J.D. degree from an American Bar Association accredited law school
    • Active law license in at least one U.S. state, in good standing
    • Minimum 3 years of experience as a practicing attorney
    • Strong experience, specifically within trusts and estates. (Bonus, but not required).
    • Probate or estate controversy
    • Commercial contracting
    • Investment Advisors Act
    • Strong communication skills (written and verbal), with an impressive ability to breakdown and articulate complex legal considerations in layman terms
    • Proactive, entrepreneurial and problem-solving mindset with a passion for new areas of business and technology development in fintech and estate planning
    • Excellent judgment and aptitude for optimization given ambiguous and imperfect information
    • Ability to lead projects as a resourceful and execution-oriented self-starter, to pivot between projects and competing objectives, to learn quickly and to think creatively
    • Ability to collaborate with and build strong relationships across departments
    • Experience with business development or speaking engagements
    • Willingness to travel 3 to 4 times a year to attend sales obligations and company retreats (U.S. only)
