Job Summary

The Georgia Department of Education's (GaDOE)- Legal Services Division is recruiting for an experienced Associate General Counsel. Under limited supervision, the Associate General Counsel will provide assistance to Georgia Department of Education personnel regarding legal rights, obligations, and privileges. The job responsibilities include, but not limited to:

Description of Duties

  • Provide legal services, such as researching state and federal laws and regulations, write memorandum, review legislation, and draft new or amended rules or regulations;
  • Assist with special education and other federal grant programs;
  • Provide recommendations and advice on the legal implications of current and/or amended business processes;
  • Interact professionally with Georgia Department of Education staff, other public officials, and constituents to resolve conflicts and controversies in a broad range of subjects;
  • May prepare and review contracts; and
  • May assist with responses to Open Records requests and provide guidance on Open Meeting issues.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to applicants, who, in addition to meeting the minimum qualifications, possess one or more of the following:

  • Experience working with state and/or federal governmental entities
  • Experience working with public educational agencies
  • Licensure to practice law in Georgia

****This is a remote/telework position based in Downtown Atlanta. Some statewide travel may be required.

Juris Doctorate from an accredited college or university AND license to practice law in the State of Georgia OR eligibility to sit for the next Georgia Bar examination followed by Georgia Bar exam passage and licensure to practice law in the State of Georgia within one (1) year of hiring OR reciprocity AND Three years of relevant legal experience OR Three years of experience required at the lower-level Attorney 3 (LEP022)
