Assistant Staff Counsel
The Miami Marlins seek an attorney (2022 or 2023 law school graduate) to join the Marlins’ legal team as an Assistant Staff Counsel. This is an entry-level legal position and a unique opportunity for a lawyer early in their career to join the legal department of a Major League Baseball franchise. The Assistant Staff Counsel will be responsible for providing legal support and service to the Marlins’ legal department and other departments within the Marlins’ organization. This includes reviewing, drafting, negotiating, managing, and enforcing the Marlins’ business contracts and operational agreements; ensuring compliance with applicable law and MLB rules and regulations; managing workers compensation cases; providing administrative support to the Marlins’ legal department; and assisting the Marlins’ legal team on other legal matters, as requested. This is an in-person position that will be located at the Marlins’ offices in Miami, Florida.
Essential Functions:
Review, draft, manage, and enforce corporate sponsorship agreements, luxury suite and premium seat agreements, and marketing agreements
Advise and assist in the implementation of all promotions, contests, and sweepstakes
Review, draft, and manage non-baseball event agreements and third-party vendor agreements
Review, draft, and manage non-disclosure agreements
Review, draft, and manage waivers and releases for events at loanDepot park and strategize with the Marlins’ Risk Manager to minimize risks to the Marlins
Research various legal issues and provide written and verbal legal opinions as needed
Manage the worker’s compensation litigation process, as requested
Manage the Legal Department’s electronic document management system
Perform certain administrative tasks as needed, including tracking and organizing contracts and maintaining legal files
Qualifications & Requirements:
Strong writing skills, analytical ability, and oral communication skills required
Strong organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail, while maintaining an ability to work in a fast-paced environment
Strong interpersonal skills, and a person who is positive, team-oriented, & self-starting required
Ability to work extended hours and/or weekends as required by deadlines and event scheduling
Ability to work in, or relocate to, Miami, Florida full-time.
Suggested Education & Experience Guidelines:
J.D. degree (class of 2022 or 2023) from an accredited law school required
Bar admission or eligible for authorized house counsel certification in Florida required
Work or internship experience in drafting and managing business contracts strongly preferred
Work or internship with another sports organization a plus
Superior record of academic achievement and leadership initiative required
