JOB DESCRIPTION
OVERVIEW:
Under general guidance and direction from the County Attorney and the Chief Civil Deputy, performs complex professional legal work on behalf of Weber Countys elected officials and departments.
YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES:
(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the listed examples include all duties which may be found in positions of this class.)
Advise and represent the Weber County Commission, elected officials, and departments on civil legal matters.
Research, draft, and issue opinions as requested.
Draft and review ordinances, resolutions, policies, procedures, contracts, memoranda, correspondence, and other legal documents.
Provide advice on risk management issues, including litigation strategies; attend and participate in public and departmental meetings as needed.
Prepare pleadings, conduct discovery, investigate cases, interview witnesses, and otherwise litigate civil matters on behalf of Weber County in court and before administrative agencies.
May occasionally assist in criminal cases.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Weber County Attorney or the Chief Civil Deputy.
ABOUT YOU:
Education: Graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor degree.
Experience: Experience preferred, but not required.
Knowledge: Working knowledge of advocacy techniques; principles of law and their application; civil trial procedures and rules of evidence; Utah Code and local ordinances and how they apply to county government operations; case law related to a variety of county government subjects; principles, practices, and methods used in legal research; knowledge of Weber County personnel and operating policies and procedures.
Skills/Abilities: Provide accurate and timely legal advice to elected officials and departments; conduct the prosecution or defense of civil cases as assigned; present statements of fact, law, and argument intelligently and logically; gather and evaluate information obtained through research, investigations, and interrogations; apply legal principles and knowledge to individual cases and problems; establish and maintain effective working relationships with elected officials, employees, other agencies, and the general public; follow written and oral instructions; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. This includes the ability, both orally and in writing, to articulate a legal argument or factual statement confidently, concisely, and convincingly.
YOUR SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants must be licensed to practice law in the state of Utah within six months after the hire date. Must possess a valid Utah driver's license. Pass an extensive criminal background check and pre-employment drug screening.

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
