Work Arrangement

This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Detroit Renaissance Center Global HQ, Detroit, MI, three times per week, at minimum.

The Role

The State and Local Income Tax Counsel is responsible for GMs U.S. State & Local income Tax audit and controversy management, overseeing matters from initial audit notices through the appeals processes. The role is also responsible for advising on the impact of proposed state income tax legislation, state income tax law changes, state tax impact of new business initiatives, state tax impact of new federal tax laws, and coordinating changes to filing positions with GMs Domestic Tax Analysis Group. The role involves a high level of independent judgment, decision-making, accuracy, creativity and initiative.

What You'll Do

  • Serves as GMs subject matter expert and advisor on state and local tax matters

  • Coordinate state tax audits, and serve as GMs primary point of contact with state income tax auditors, scheduling audits and providing information and analysis to auditors, providing strategic analysis of proposed adjustments and audit workpapers, and managing contract resources and external counsel

  • Draft and submit state tax protests, work with hearing officers to achieve favorable settlements, and represent GM at related informal conferences

  • Advise GM Public Policy team on the impacts of proposed state tax legislation to GM

  • Provide advice on the state tax impact of changes in law (both federal and state) and new business initiatives, and coordinate changes in tax filing positions with GMs Domestic Tax Analysis Group

  • Manage overall audit assignment and workflow and make recommendations on resolution to management

  • Manage documentation of uncertain state tax positions, including strategic review of quarterly submissions

  • Collaborate with others in Domestic Tax Counsel on state income tax modeling and analysis and represent Domestic Counsel in Tax Staff and broader Finance sessions as needed (special projects, developing and present data and recommendations, participating in key meetings, etc.)

  • Assist with other federal income tax matters within the Domestic Tax Counsel Group on an as-needed basis

  • Creatively solve problems and identify and implement process improvements

    Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

    • 5-8 years of relevant experience from a large accounting firm, law firm, or private industry

    • Bachelors degree from an accredited university with focus in accounting, finance, business, taxation or related field

    • Ability to manage workload within statutory and internal deadlines, prioritizing assignments

    • Strong tax research and writing skills

    • Demonstrated experience and subject matter expertise in state and local tax matters

    • Demonstrated experience with controversy management and/or issue resolution with government counterparties

    • Self-motivated, with strong interpersonal, team and partnering skills

    What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

    • J.D. from an accredited law school and a member of the bar in good standing

    • Ability to effectively communicate actionable recommendations
