POSITION SUMMARY

NAACP Empowerment Programs, Inc. (“NAACP EPI”), the 501c(3) programs arm of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (“NAACP”), a nonprofit, membership-based, civil rights advocacy organization, seeks an experienced attorney with transactional and governance experience. Substantial experience in drafting and reviewing contracts and in reviewing and interpreting corporate bylaws and other corporate governance documents is strongly preferred. The Assistant General Counsel works with all components of the NAACP and NAACP EPI and provides legal service to staff, board members and board committees of both corporate entities.


Summary of Duties:

The Assistant General Counsel is under the direct supervision of the General Counsel. The attorney performs such duties that are assigned by the General Counsel and/or the Associate General Counsel, including but not limited to:

• Represents branches and state conferences in affirmative civil rights litigation.

• Assists with oversight and management of outside legal counsel in civil rights litigation.

• Works on advocacy initiatives for the Office of the General Counsel.

• Works with Policy Department to give legal perspective on policy issues.

• Works with partners and civil rights organizations to ensure that litigation strategies are aligned and consistent with OGC initiatives.

• Assist the NAACP in strategy, analysis and advocacy on civil rights initiatives.

• Works with Units to assist with development and implementation of civil rights training programs.

• Provide assistance in various civil rights initiatives including Voting Rights, Housing, Education and Criminal Justice; and

• Provides such other support as is needed to effectively carry out the mission of the Legal Department.


Qualifications:

The ideal candidate for this position will possess many, if not all, of the following professional qualifications, competencies, and personal qualities:

• Candidate must be in possession of a Juris Doctor Degree from an accredited university.

• Strong oral communications and interpersonal skills.

• Ability for high performance in a fast-paced environment.

• Excellent research, analysis and writing skills.

• Capacity for strategic and creative thinking; and,

• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
