The Moritz College of Law and Legal Aid of Southeast and Central Ohio (LASCO) in conjunction with the Skaggs Family Foundation are offering a one-year (13 month) Legal Help for Homeless Youth Fellowship for the 2024-2025, autumn to autumn timeframe. The Fellow, working under the supervision of attorneys at LASCO, will work to improve opportunities and secure stability for low-income Franklin County youth by offering legal education, outreach, and representation to youth who are housing insecure or experiencing homelessness and who need access to civil legal services. The Fellow (Staff Attorney) will be full-time and will spend approximately half of their time at homeless shelters, drop-in centers and other locations with service providers working with homeless youth and conducting trainings. The other 50% of their time will be spent at LASCO working on cases, preparing trainings, consulting with legal aid attorneys and volunteers, and organizing work strategy to meet the needs of homeless youth.

The Fellow (Staff Attorney) will also:

  • Develop plans to continue outreach and strategies for engagement, particularly with underserved groups including People of Color, immigrants, members of the LGBTQ+ community, and youth with mental health impairments or substance use disorders

  • Identify the most pressing legal needs and how LASCs resources can be best used to resolve needs Work on the 50 highest need cases in the first 12 months

  • Conduct at least 6 trainings for other organizations working with homeless youth

  • Develop and distribute outreach materials to at least 6 different locations

  • Participate in the Columbus Coalition for the Homeless and attend their regular meetings

Members of the Class of 2024 who have a desire to assist youth experiencing critical need regarding housing, health, education and legal issues are invited to apply for the Fellowship. Previous experience with people in crisis or under-represented populations is preferred. Ideal candidate will be comfortable working across organizations and interacting with children as well as with school and court personnel. Candidate must be compassionate and committed to working with diverse populations.

The Fellow must be a 2024 law school graduate and sit for the July 2024 Ohio Bar Examination. Passage is required for continuation of the Fellowship. Valid Ohio drivers license is required. The Fellow (Staff Attorney) will serve from October 2024 through October 2025.

Additional Information:

The annual pay will be $78,500. The Fellow (Staff Attorney) will gain legal experience and receive supervision and mentoring from LASC attorneys. Health, vision and dental insurance are offered as part of the Fellowship as well as $6,000 loan repayment assistance and $1,500 for professional development activities.
