Jewelers Vigilance Committee

Assistant Counsel

New York, NY Hybrid Full Time

The Jewelers Vigilance Committee (JVC) is a not-for-profit trade association that serves as the ethical heart of the jewelry industry. For more than 100 years, JVC's sole focus has been on helping jewelers build flourishing businesses that operate with the highest levels of integrity and legal and regulatory compliance. We are the jewelry industry's independent legal expert, providing compliance guidance to a wide range of members, including large luxury brands, small mom-and-pop businesses, and everything in between.

We are hiring an Assistant Counsel to join our small but mighty team. This position reports to the President, CEO & General Counsel (that’s one person with three titles!)

At JVC, you will have the opportunity to practice as a generalist, providing guidance on a broad range of legal projects and research matters, including those related to advertising, anti-money laundering, sanctions, intellectual property, and more esoteric areas such as wildlife materials used in jewelry, memo transactions, and any other legal topic that is relevant to the jewelry industry. The Assistant Counsel performs legal research, writes articles, and generally supports the legal staff of the JVC. This includes engaging in activities to further the mission of the JVC, such as increasing and retaining membership and building successful programs. In this role, you will serve as a strategic partner to internal and external stakeholders and have the opportunity to develop deep relationships with JVC member organizations. The ideal candidate is resourceful, curious, and motivated.

What you will do:

  • Research issues pertaining to compliance with all regulations and laws or other issues relevant to the mission of the JVC and to the jewelry industry.
  • Write legal research memos and brief articles for publication on research matters, including timely Member Alerts when there are relevant changes in laws or regulations to the jewelry industry.
  • Answer member inquiries regarding compliance matters.
  • Keep up-to-date on global changes to legislation, regulations, and relevant legal news, in particular those specific to jewelry
  • Monitor member websites and advertising for compliance.
  • Present educational seminars and participate in panels at industry events, including conferences and trade shows.
  • Ensure JVC’s compliance guidance is accurate and up to date.
  • With training, assume responsibility for JVC’s trademark practice, including monitoring the weekly Official Gazette and filing oppositions and motions for cancellation when needed.
  • Assist legal team in fulfilling all board requirements, including bylaw-required governance actions, record maintenance, minutes-taking, meeting planning and materials distribution.
  • Assist in the implementation of strategically designed monitoring projects to further the mission of the JVC.
  • Receive and respond to subpoena requests for records of the JVC; supervise document retention policy for all JVC records.
  • Work with legal interns from area law schools, assigning tasks and supervising their work.
  • Balance numerous, competing tasks and priorities while effectively communicating with internal and external stakeholders.

What you bring to the team:

  • J.D. degree
  • Current member in good standing with the New York state bar
  • Excellent legal research, administrative, and writing skills
  • Minimum 2 years (or equivalent) legal experience
  • Ability to clearly distill complex legal concepts for a business audience
  • Deep curiosity and motivation to learn
  • Ability to maintain detailed and accurate records
  • Comprehensive communication skills with the ability to connect to members, outside counsel, government officials, and the public
  • Team player mentality with a willingness to perform any task that furthers the interests of JVC
  • Demonstrated interest in jewelry or fashion

Note: it’s entirely possible that you don’t have all of these and are still a great fit. It’s not expected that any single candidate would have expertise across all of these areas — we’re looking for candidates that are particularly strong in a few areas and have demonstrated interest and capabilities to learn in others.

JVC’s Core Values:

We strive to be a compassionate and caring working environment and we look for individuals who share our commitments:

  • Fully Invested in Our Members’ Success: We are a membership-based organization so we’re always looking for new ways to serve our membership and ensure they have the information they need to thrive.

  • Open Communication: Every team member is valued and we thrive on mutual trust. Collaboration is vital to our day to day. We are a small team of 6 so everyone is important.
  • Growth: Expanding our minds and abilities and expanding the reach and platform of the JVC. We stand on a 100+ year foundation, are curious and engaged in the now, and excited about the future.
  • Jewelry is magic: We really love jewelry! We are passionate about jewelry and all its history, uses and meanings as well as all the lives it touches along the supply chain.

Salary + Classification:

  • This full-time exempt role has an expected base pay range of $110,000-$130,000 per year based on a candidate’s experience and qualifications.
  • Health, dental, 401K contribution, pre-tax transit, parental leave policy, generous vacation time, summer Fridays, consistent schedule
  • JVC’s office is located in the Flatiron neighborhood of New York City. You must reside within commuting distance of NYC for this position. We are a hybrid team, working together in person on regularly scheduled days.
  • Ideal start date September 1 or earlier
  • We’re a committed workplace where we all show up and give our best, but also respect people’s boundaries (read: you are encouraged to have a passion outside of work)
