The General Counsel is a multifaceted role that will provide legal support for all aspects of the development, construction, management and operation of a real estate portfolio that includes affordable housing, market rate housing and commercial properties. Candidates should be able to deliver a wide range of legal services in furtherance of the organization’s business objectives and pivot quickly between diverse matters. Assist the development team in all legal aspects of real estate acquisition, disposition, and financing, transactions, with a particular emphasis on housing transactions.

Draft, review and negotiate purchase contracts and general commercial contracts for property management and development including vendor, service, security and construction agreements;

Form and maintain business entities, including parent corporations and multiple limited liability companies.

Provide legal support and guidance on day-to-day business operations, including personnel matters.

Draft and negotiate commercial leases and assist with management of commercial tenant relationships (retail and office spaces, rooftop cell tower and laundry services).

Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations pertaining to real estate.

Liaise with outside counsel and internal personnel on personal injury, housing discrimination, general commercial, code violations, and other litigation matters.

Provide general legal support as required by business units.

Requirements:

JD degree and active membership with the Illinois bar

At least seven years of experience in real estate transactions

Prior experience at a law firm or as in house counsel at a real estate company preferable

Understanding of affordable housing programs (LIHTC; HUD) preferred

Understanding of personnel matters

Ability to review and comment on a wide range of commercial contracts

Excellent project management and organizational skills

Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)

Strong attention to detail; Adept at learning new skills quickly

Capable of multi-tasking and prioritizing in a fast-paced environment

Sound business judgment

Experience working with government agencies

Collaborative and collegial working style

We do not have a hybrid work environment. We are in the office.

Salary: $175,000 -- $225,000.
