About the Job:

The Deputy General Counsel (“DGC”), under the guidance and supervision of the Chief Legal Officer, manages, directs, and executes legal services related to the facility operations and development efforts of Summit BHC (together with its affiliates and operating facilities, the “Company”). The services include providing legal support to all aspects of operations, including drafting and negotiating contracts to support corporate operations and individual operating facilities, supporting the development team in the acquisition and development of new facilities and the expansion of existing facilities, and advising on regulatory issues, including those relating to fraud and abuse and referral source matters.

The DGC will have considerable experience in (1) advising healthcare providers in operations and regulatory matters; (2) legal operations and departmental development; (3) facility licensure and enrollment matters; and (4) supervising and directing legal matters related to growth and development.

This leadership role will be held by one who can consistently educate and persuade individuals at all levels of the Company and is kind, calm under pressure, thoughtful, and collaborative, with the ability to earn and keep the trust of individuals at all levels of the Company.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Partner with and influence other leaders to identify, manage, and mitigate legal and regulatory risks in operational areas, and provide creative and well-informed solutions;

  • Through leadership and actions, demonstrate a commitment to continual improvement;

  • Provide strategic legal counsel to operational and business partners across the organization on complex matters;

  • Analyze legal and regulatory requirements and provide guidance to the Company in all aspects of facility operations;

  • Work to ensure that the contractual relationships among the Company and its vendors, suppliers, contractors, and providers are consistent with the Company’s strategic goals and objectives, and comply with applicable laws, regulations, and ethical standards;

  • Provide strategic direction and leadership to the Company’s growth and development efforts, including overseeing licensure and legal matters related to opening new facilities and expanding existing facilities;

  • Participate in efforts to ensure the Company and its employees, contractors and affiliated providers maintain and conduct themselves in accordance with the highest level of legal compliance and ethical standards;

  • Serve as a member of, manage and mentor a high performing team; build and maintain exceptional employee morale and motivation; and foster a diverse, equitable and inclusive department and workplace;

  • Present actionable and creative solutions to the executive leadership team, other corporate and facility leadership, and Board of Directors;

  • Actively contribute to Legal and the organization through development and implementation of industry-leading best practices to build departmental capabilities, processes, and functions;

  • Consistently identify and satisfy unmet needs and find solutions to novel business problems; and

  • Ensure that consistent and standard advice is provided across the group with respect to all matters.

Education/Experience/Skill Requirements:

  • Juris Doctorate (J.D.) required.

  • Ten or more years of relevant healthcare regulatory experience in a law firm and/or healthcare system required.

Active license to practice law required.

Supervisory Requirements:

Five or more years of supervisory experience required.
