Job Summary:
The Greeley City Attorneys Office is seeking an attorney to join our team. This position may be filled at the Attorney I, Attorney II, or Senior Attorney level, depending on the qualifications of the applicant. The City Attorneys Office represents the City of Greeley and acts as a legal advisor to the City Council, other City officials, and the Citys departments, boards, and commissions. At the City Attorneys Office, we strive to provide the highest quality legal representation to the City of Greeley; to give sound and objective legal advice to City officials and staff; and to act in accordance with the highest ethical and professional standards.

The attorney chosen for this role will have the opportunity to practice municipal law in a vibrant and growing community. Once hired, the attorney will also provide legal counsel to the officers, employees, and departments of the City on a variety of municipal law topics. Examples include topics such as legislation, land use matters, taxation, and employment law. The City of Greeley handles a wide variety of litigation matters in-house, providing opportunities for the chosen attorney to handle a variety of litigation matters before local, state, and federal courts. Experience, Knowledge, and Skills:
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor's degree (four-year degree) from an accredited college/university program.
Juris Doctorate degree or equivalent from accredited law school.
Licensed to practice law in the State of Colorado (or if application is pending, admission to practice within 60 days of hiring date).

PREFERRED:
Training or experience in municipal law is preferred.
A minimum five (5) years of experience practicing law is required to be considered for an Attorney II position.
A minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience practicing law is required to be considered for the Senior Attorney position.
For the Attorney II and Senior Attorney positions, expertise founded on wide experience in a discipline or field requiring comprehensive understanding of a combination of involved practices, precedents, facts, and conditions, or in a broad group of business systems is expected. At this level, knowledge has been supplemented by substantial work experience or enhanced by additional schooling in a specialized field in order to meet job requirements.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to answer questions from city employees regarding legal issues related to City projects and programs.
Ability to respond to inquiries from members of the public regarding legal issues related to City functions.
Ability to provide legal advice to city employees with recommendations on the best course of action to take in a specific situation.
Knowledge of the business and organizational structure of Colorado municipalities.
Collaboration skills, including the ability to work with others from different areas and backgrounds to reach a common goal.
Skilled in conducting negotiations with opposing parties and their attorneys related to administrative matters, criminal prosecutions, and civil litigation matters.
Knowledge of strategic planning of broad policies and specific objectives.
Ability to determine what needs to be done in applying broad City policies, as this is largely left up to the employee. The incumbent in this role will need to determine what has been done, what can be done, proposals for long-term policy, and estimates of what new resources are required. Limits are set by organizational policy, general directives, overall goals, and objectives.

Essential Functions (Duties and Responsibilities):
Understands civil litigation, and has experience applying and interpreting statutes, rules, and case law.
Represents the City before federal and state courts, including knowledge of motions practice, civil discovery, and depositions. Drafts legal briefs. Prepares and presents oral arguments.
Prepares administrative law matters, negotiate stipulated agreements, present facts, and evidence to an administrative tribunal.
Provides sound legal advice and representation to the officers, employees, and agencies of the City.
Provides case and matter management including motions practice, civil discovery, and depositions.
Conducts detailed legal research on complex topics. Draft legal advice letters, memoranda, and formal written legal opinions.
Coordinates work with other attorneys and paralegals.

Prepares contracts and other transactional documents. Drafts ordinances, resolutions and other legal documents required to complete city projects and initiatives.
Attends meetings of city departments and work groups to provide analysis of legal issues and to provide legal advice necessary to develop appropriate policies and procedures and to formulate rules and regulations for the administration of City government.
Attends and participates as a representative of the City in meetings of local and regional governments and related entities regarding matters of importance to City projects.
Represents the interests of the City, develop relationships with allied agencies, and coordinate inter-agency efforts that are aligned with City projects.
Maintains subject-matter files in case management system. Updates forms to reflect changes in legislation and case law. Develops training materials and other client communications.
Participates in continuing legal education programs.
Performs other job duties, as assigned.

Work Environment:
Work is primarily performed in an office environment.
Light to moderate physical effort that includes frequent standing or walking or maintaining arms and hands in the same position for repetitive tasks. Frequently works with light objects and light hand tools.
Vision enough to interpret computer screens and documents to assist the public and complete work assignments; specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time in courtroom and by means of note-taking or mental capacity, be able to recall information presented in courts to be able to assert the City's position.
Communication skills to effectively convey information to the court, public and other City employees both in person and on the phone.
