Job Description:

Position Summary:

We are seeking a seasoned attorney with strong business acumen and demonstrable subject matter expertise in the area of Labor and Employment Law who is eager to join a amazingly talented Legal Team in a thriving company. The ideal candidate will have experience advising companies with labor and employment related issues including employee benefits, executive compensation, risk management, internal investigations, employment and collective bargaining agreements, as well as expertise with labor relations. This position will also help manage a variety of other subject matters working closely with company leadership. This is an on-site position based in the Company's headquarters in Grand Rapids, MI.

Heres what youll do:

  • Provide advice and counsel in the areas of Labor & Employment law to the Company, including counseling internal clients on Title VII, ADA, ADEA, FMLA, FLSA and other federal employment laws and state equivalents.

  • Skillfully draft and negotiate employment and collective bargaining agreements.

  • Effectively represent the Company in unfair labor practice cases, dispute resolutions and other employment litigation matters.

  • Advise the Company on complex restructuring and other organizational changes.

  • Represent the Company in proceedings before courts and administrative bodies.

  • Manage workplace investigations, employee misconduct, and wage and hour matters.

  • Draft, negotiate and manage termination/severance agreements, and non-compete/non-solicitation violation disputes.

  • Develop, interpret and help rollout benefit and compensation plans.

  • Serves on the Companys Retirement Committee as legal advisor, non-voting member.

  • Serves as trusted advisor to the Human Resources Team to help develop and deliver training on labor and employment topics, administer the employee handbook and code of conduct, support with OSHA/OFCCP/and EEO compliance and investigations.

  • Identify and provide counsel on key risks and priorities, and drive compliance in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and standards.

  • Assist with the effective management of external counsel to ensure efficient use of resources.

  • Support the Chief Legal Officer in other transactions or matters of strategic importance to the Company.

  • Assist with the creation, implementation and enhancement of corporate processes, policies, and procedures.

  • Maintain current knowledge of laws, legal regulations and rules, industry trends, and best legal practices within area(s) of specialization.

  • Provide leadership and individual contributions in assigned areas of responsibilities.

  • Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed.

Heres what youll need:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited U.S. law school, with a strong academic background.

  • Licensed in good standing to practice law in at least one U.S. state.

  • Minimum of 10 years of post-graduation legal experience working in Labor and Employment law gained in law firm and corporate settings is preferred with a strong business acumen.

  • Demonstrable experience working in the area of positive labor relations, developing and conducting training and driving positive employee engagement, effectively managing dispute resolution, and skillfully negotiating collective bargaining agreements is strongly preferred.

  • Excellent advocacy and negotiation skills, with a proven track record of success in labor and employment litigation.

  • Executive compensation experience preferred.

  • Client-focused and able to keep pace with evolving business priorities and needs.

  • Ability to effectively communicate across all levels within the organization and externally.

  • Excellent project management skills, and ability to effectively multitask.

  • Ability to identify issues, gather relevant information, devise solutions and action plans and obtain support from the business to drive compliance and organizational objectives.

  • Highly self-motivated, collaborative, trustworthy and detailed oriented; Committed to learning and mastering new skills and responsibilities.

  • Ability to travel occasionally, as necessary.

  • Team player; works well with others.
