OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Sr. Trial Attorney is part of MMPO Defense the division of MagMutual devoted to defending MagMutuals PolicyOwners in medical malpractice lawsuits and medical licensing matters. Under the leadership of the Chief Trial and Managing Attorney, the Sr. Trial Attorney will directly represent healthcare providers and entities during litigation, at trial, and before the Georgia Composite Medical Board.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • Directly represent healthcare professionals in medical malpractice and state board licensing/credentialing matters.
  • Pursue a client driven, service centered, and trial focused approach to the practice of law.
  • Perform all legal work at the highest level in conformity with state rules and in compliance with defense guidelines.
  • Supervise paralegal(s) and trial attorney(s).
  • Handle all aspects of litigation/trial work.
  • Handle all aspects of discovery including taking depositions and preparing witnesses for depositions.
  • Handle all aspects of settlement including mediations.
  • Prepare legal opinions and submit timely reports to claims professionals on all significant case activities.
  • Adhere to MagMutuals defense guidelines as they apply to MMPO Defense.
  • Ensure all files are properly documented and organized and that access to and/or the sharing of confidential information is properly restricted.
  • Utilize case management software for maintaining notes, diaries, calendars, etc. on assigned cases in accordance with operating guidelines and procedures.
  • Complete continuing education seminars and courses from internal and external sources to enhance medical, insurance, regulatory, and legal knowledge.
  • Attend week-long trial academy to enhance courtroom skills.
  • Research and maintain up-to-date knowledge of statutes, case law, and industry trends applicable to medical professional liability.
  • Travel as case needs dictate, potentially on short notice.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • A minimum of 8 years of litigation experience with an emphasis on medical malpractice matters.
  • Experience handling high impact cases from beginning to end.
  • Experience handling state board licensing and credentialing matters is preferred.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to project a professional demeanor at all times.
  • Ability to properly handle confidential information.
  • Ability to multitask, manage priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent problem solving skills and ability to make decisions strategically.
  • Flexibility to travel as needed.
  • Must have a valid drivers license.
Must be a current member of the Bar in the State where practicing and maintain necessary licensing and continuing education requirements throughout employment.
