About the Office
The mission of the National Security Division (NSD) is to coordinate the Department of Justice's (DOJ's) efforts in carrying out its core mission of combating terrorism and protecting national security, including protecting our national assets from state-sponsored threats to the private sector. NSD is responsible for supervising the enforcement of all federal criminal laws related to counterterrorism and counterespionage, except those specifically assigned to other divisions. NSD also serves as DOJ's liaison to the United States Intelligence Community (USIC) and represents the government and the USIC before the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. NSD advises the Attorney General regarding all matters of national security policy.

Job Description
The incumbent is responsible for implementing legally and procedurally strategic approaches to the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and Privacy Act (PA), and privacy compliance requirements. The FOIA staff receive, review, and process all FOIA and PA information requests received by the Division, prepare quarterly and annual reports, support litigation when the Division is sued under the FOIA, and serve as a liaison with other divisions and agencies on both FOIA and PA matters. The FOIA staff also creates or reviews privacy compliance products, such as Initial Privacy Assessments, Privacy Impact Assessments, and System of Records Notices.
The incumbent serves as the Supervisory FOIA Attorney. The employee plays an important role in further developing strategies to meet priorities and works closely with the FOIA and other Division staff to respond to the growing number of information requests from the public. The incumbent supervises the FOIA staff and is responsible for receiving, assessing, and appropriately releasing information in response to FOIA and PA requests, and provides legal guidance on the application of the FOIA and PA.
The primary purpose of this position is to implement and oversee the NSD FOIA and PA programs. The Supervisory FOIA Attorney is the principal legal advisor responsible for providing expert advice and guidance to NSD's General Counsel, the Records and Freedom of Information Unit's attorneys and staff, senior managers, and other federal agencies on issues at the intersection of national security and civil litigation with an emphasis on FOIA, PA and other information disclosure-related matters, including in complicated multi-agency FOIA and PA cases.
Assists with other OGC legal responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
Applicants must possess a J.D. degree, be duly licensed and authorized to practice as an attorney under the laws of a State, Territory, or the District of Columbia, and have 4 or more years of post-J.D. professional experience to be qualified at the GS-15 level. Applicants must also have superior academic credentials, writing and analytic skills, the ability to communicate effectively, and extensive experience with FOIA.
Candidates with experience in national security, law enforcement and prosecution matters are preferred. Applicants must also be able to qualify for the highest and most sensitive security clearances.
