As a Senior Staff Attorney for The Hartford, you will join a collaborative environment where you will have direct contact with our Claims Professionals while working from home! We are looking for a colleague with a strong background in civil litigation defending both personal lines and commercial lines cases, including motor vehicle liability, general liability, premises liability, products liability, jobsite injury and construction defect cases. This position shall provide coverage for Oregon and Washington. Our in-house, remote work opportunity is well-suited for an experienced attorney who is dedicated to the practice of law and committed to excellent customer service. The Senior Staff Attorney will handle the following key responsibilities:

  • First chair defense of a diverse caseload

  • Independently prepare for and represent clients at hearings, depositions, mediations, arbitrations, and trials

  • Analyze complex legal and factual issues and conduct legal research.

  • Independently create and present defense strategies on behalf of clients

  • Prepare complex pleadings, written discovery, motions and briefs in support of defense strategies

  • Partner with our Claims Partners to achieve the best results for our Hartford insured

  • Provide effective and timely communications, information, legal advice and other services to clients on legal and factual issues

  • Communicate with the court, witnesses, opposing counsel and co-counsel with professional diplomacy and discretion

  • Facilitate prompt, efficient and effective disposition of assigned case

  • Attend continuing legal education seminars to maintain a high level of professional expertise

WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

  • Minimum of 7 years of legal practice experience handling tort (auto/slip & fall) defense cases in Oregon state. Experience defending construction defect, product liability, jobsite injury and complex general liability claims is strongly preferred

  • Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school and license to practice law in the state of Oregon is required. Preference shall be given to applicants who are also licensed to practice in Washington and/or demonstrate a willingness to acquire the license

  • First-chair jury trial experience is strongly preferred

  • Positive-minded and collaborative team-player attitude

  • Strong legal research and writing skills

  • Solid MS Office proficiency (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook & OneNote)

  • Lexis Nexis experience a plus

  • Self-directed with excellent organizational and prioritization skills

  • Strong computer skills and flexibility to adapt to new software as required

This position is a full remote work position; the selected candidate will travel for appearances within Oregon and Washington as needed.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartfords total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$123,360 - $185,040
