From airports to boardrooms, our Legal team provides advice and counsel on all aspects of the business, assessing legal risks and compliance, while our Ethics and Compliance team ensures that we run an ethically sound operation. Key Responsibilities Include:

The Trade Compliance Director will develop, implement and manage the Company’s trade compliance program, including compliance with the regulations administered and enforced by (i) the US Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry & Security (BIS), including the Export Administration Regulations (EAR) and International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR); (ii) the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Controls (OFAC); (iii) the US State Department; and (iv) US Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The Trade Compliance Director will also develop, implement, and manage the Company’s compliance-related policies and procedures, provide compliance-related advice and support to the Company’s business teams, and will assist in connection with the Company’s compliance with applicable foreign trade control laws.

  • Reporting within the Legal Department, this position will be part of a nimble cross-functional team. Lead key initiatives and be the subject matter expert on all issues related to the Company’s trade compliance program, including import/export operations, auditing, product classification, third party due diligence review and supporting sanctions screening and policies. Partner with business and site-level leadership to help ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations while meeting business objectives.

  • Develop, manage, and implement enterprise and risk-adjusted business-level trade compliance program in accordance with global trade regulations and corporate policies and procedures. Ensure import, export, and supply chain activities comply with U.S. Government laws, regulations, guidelines, and expectations. Act as Empowered Official on behalf of the Company. Develop and implement risk-based audit plans. Lead and manage internal and external audits and investigations. For applicable foreign business partners and end-users, implement appropriate safeguards against the inadvertent transfer of controlled technology, data, and hardware.

  • Advise applicable business groups on licensing policies, regulations, guidelines, and practices under EAR and ITAR. Draft timely export licenses, technology control plans, and other forms of export licensing requests or documentation. Respond to inquiries on trade compliance and licensing policies/practices/guidelines on international transactions and program activities. Monitor legal and regulatory developments impacting business teams, providing appropriate guidance to mitigate impact.

  • Identify trade compliance issues, proactively develop solutions, and provide guidance on resolving issues to support business objectives while ensuring compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and internal policies. Provide compliance-related advice in connection with the Company’s transactions, and interface with the Company’s business teams.

  • Analyze products to determine applicable export jurisdiction, commodity classification, Schedule B/Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS).

  • Identify, obtain, and manage effective tools and control systems, including automation where appropriate. Identify, obtain, and manage a system of records as set forth in applicable laws and regulations.

  • Develop, maintain, and enhance trade compliance policies, procedures and training materials across applicable business groups. Ensure that trade compliance policies are fully supported and implemented. Lead the Company’s planning, implementation, and presentation of trade compliance training, which may include in-person, virtual, web-based training, and use of a learning management system, as well as other related Company trade compliance initiatives.

  • This position is hybrid based in Chicago with up to 35% travel required, both domestically and internationally.

Qualifications

What’s needed to succeed (Minimum Qualifications):

  • Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field such as international business, trade or export control, or logistics.

  • 10+ years of equivalent experience in trade compliance, export/import management, international trade or related areas and 5+ years of equivalent experience in trade compliance management, export/import management, international trade or related areas.

  • Familiarity with U.S. Government regulations, procedures and organizations is highly desired.

  • Position requires an individual who is a self-starter, detailed oriented and well organized.

  • Strong leadership, management of import/export control specialists (provide feedback, mentorship, training).

  • The ability to interpret complex and/or detailed regulations, with limited guidance and/or direction required.

  • Demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills required.

  • Requires excellent written communication skills and the ability to effectively communicate, with a customer-oriented attitude.

  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with internal and external customers, associates, departments, and other teams.

  • Strong understanding of U.S. government agency responsibilities in the export licensing review process and their interrelationships.

  • Excellent computer skills: SAP & MS Office Suite.

  • Solid verbal and written communication.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the US for any employer without sponsorship.

What will help you propel from the pack (Preferred Qualifications):

  • Juris Doctorate degree.

  • (8)+years of experience managing an export and trade compliance program or (12)+ years of equivalent experience in trade compliance management, export/import management, international trade or related areas.

  • Customs Broker License (LCB), Certified U.S. Export Compliance Officer (CUSECO) and/or Certified Import Compliance Officer (CUSICO) certifications.

  • Strong working knowledge of import and export regulations including expert knowledge of the Export Administration Regulations (EAR), the U.S. Import Regulations (19 CFR), OFAC laws, and the International Traffic and Arms Regulations (ITAR), as well as others that may apply.

  • Strong U.S. Munitions List (USML)/Commerce Control List (CCL) jurisdiction & HTS classification skills.

  • Experience in the aerospace and defense industry in an export control or compliance position is strongly preferred.

  • The ability to achieve and maintain a US Government Secret security clearance.
