Securian Financial is seeking a skilled, high-impact attorney looking for their next opportunity in the insurance industry. If you are interested in providing a wide variety of legal services in one (or more) specialized areas of insurance law to assist in the achievement of department objectives, this is the opportunity for you!

You will play a key role in providing legal advice to Individual Financial Solutions at Securian, focusing primarily on individual life insurance (but also will provide support to our group variable universal life insurance) product administration, taxation, and design while balancing business-oriented goals with legal risk. You'd represent Securian to internal and external customers, distribution channels, and government agencies. In addition, this position will also include developing company policy and providing legal advice on a variety of legal and regulatory issues related to insurance and other enterprise issues. For this role, you would be expected to have a strong work ethic and to be versatile in advising on a variety of topics.

If youre in a commutable distance (90 minutes) youll join us 2-3 days each week in our offices to collaborate and build relationships. Our policy allows flexibility for the reality of business and personal schedules. When working in our offices at least two days per week isnt feasible (vacations, illness, travel, etc.), an eight day per month standard is an option. If you are outside of the 90 minute radius, we would consider a remote opportunity for this position with occasional travel to our Home Office in St. Paul, MN.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing legal advice and support for Securians individual life insurance product administration, taxation, and design
  • Understanding and applying tax concepts related to insurance products
  • Providing legal advice and support for Securians variable group universal life insurance products
  • Conducting research, review, analysis and drafting of various documents, including contracts, insurance policies, and policies and procedures
  • Researching legal and regulatory requirements and industry practices relevant to insurance products
  • Collaborating with compliance partners on relevant compliance related matters and identifying, developing and implementing control enhancements and risk mitigation strategies
  • Consulting with Individual Financial Solutions in order to provide well-reasoned, concise counsel on legal risks while helping to achieve business-oriented goals
  • Additional responsibilities including consumer complaint resolution, review of advertising materials, and preparing registration statements
  • Identifying potential legal or regulatory issues which may impact the organizations business strategy, products, or business conduct and providing proactive legal advice accordingly
  • Developing productive relationships with industry colleagues, and participating on various enterprise and industry committees relating to insurance products

Qualifications:

  • Admitted to the practice of law in the State of Minnesota or in the appropriate jurisdiction
  • Familiarity and compliance with the existing Minnesota Rules of Professional Conduct and the existing published rules and guidelines of the Company
  • 3+ years experience in insurance law, individual income taxation law and/or relevant contract law (such as buy-sell agreements, insurance policy forms, and selling agreements)
  • Strong understanding or desire to learn individual taxation concepts relating life insurance product development and distribution, including an Interest and aptitude for mathematics and actuarial concepts
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively convey technical, legal information and ensure understanding of client constituents

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Securities experience, such as work with private placements
  • Strong working knowledge of the financial services and insurance industries, including issues associated with manufacturing, administration and distribution of related products and services
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate, establish, and maintain effective working relationships with industry partners and associates across the organization
  • Practical-minded and business-and results-oriented while operating within Securians risk appetite


Physical Job Requirements:

  • Ability to utilize the keyboard, computer and/or mouse for up to 8 hours per day
  • Ability to work at least 40 hours per week
  • Ability to utilize the phone and/or virtual meeting platform for 1-4 hours per day
