Director of Business and Legal Affairs

Job Description

Blumhouse is looking for a Director of Business & Legal Affairs to join its Film studio. Reporting to the EVP and Head of Business Affairs, the Director will handle all aspects of day-to-day feature film business and legal affairs from development to production and delivery, and focus primarily on production.


Responsibilities

  • Drafting and negotiating a variety of production and development agreements, including above and below the line talent agreements, literary acquisition, writer agreements, rights agreements, and other production-related agreements.
  • Provide counsel on various matters relating to production of feature films, including but not limited to: production legal matters and agreements, script/film clearances, labor relations/collective bargaining agreements, engagement of minors, immigration, customs, environmental regulations, review titles and credits.
  • Draft and negotiate Production/Financing/Distribution Agreements, Production Services Agreements, Assignment agreements and related corporate set-up documents; collaborate with tax and finance regarding best corporate structure for individual pictures (domestic and international) and production incentive regulations and agreements.
  • Provide legal advice on potential risks and issues in a wide range of legal areas, including clearances, intellectual property, labor and employment, immigration, safety, and tax.
  • Evaluating underlying rights and chain-of-title issues.
  • Maintaining awareness and understanding of the latest developments in the law and technology as they relate to the production and distribution of content.

Requirements

  • 2-5 years prior experience working in the entertainment industry as a lawyer in connection with the development and production of filmed entertainment content.
  • JD degree and admission to the California State Bar (or willingness and qualification to be registered In-House Counsel)
  • Ability to work proactively, independently, and reliably under tight timeframes in a very fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and cross-functionally, think practically, and be solution-oriented.
  • Strong negotiation and drafting skills mandatory.
  • Highly detail oriented.
  • Must have a cooperative, positive, team-oriented approach to work.
  • Strong analytical capabilities and judgment.
  • A flexible mind with a willingness to tackle matters outside area of expertise.
