Job Description:

The Community Solution Education Systems Legal Counsel will provide sound, proactive, timely, and responsive legal representation, advice, and support to the Systems colleges and universities. While legal subject-matter responsibilities will be broad and general in nature, specific areas in which the Legal Counsel will be expected to practice include contract review and management, policy review and management, regulatory compliance, and insurance. The Legal Counsel may also serve as a trusted advisor and supporter of other organization-wide compliance program activities.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide legal advice and offer proactive solutions to resolve legal, procedural, or administrative issues in compliance with applicable legal standards across broad practice areas.
  • Negotiate, draft, administer, advise on, and interpret a broad variety of contracts and other legal instruments memorializing the diverse activities of large, dynamic academic organizations.
  • Conduct legal research and provide analysis, written and oral advice, and education and training as needed to keep the System apprised of legal developments affecting assigned areas.
  • Draft, advance, and advise on organizational policy development, review, and interpretation.
  • Provide legal counsel and guidance to The Community Solution Education System and its colleges and universities on all aspects of state and federal regulatory compliance.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Position Requirements:

  • Ability to navigate a cross-matrixed organization and work collaboratively with all stakeholders.
  • Ability to assist and guide colleges and universities through the legal regulatory environment that affects and impacts higher education institutions.
  • Excellent analytic, verbal and written communications, and interpersonal skills, including the ability to advise and influence a broad spectrum of constituents at all levels.
  • Adept in efficient and effective legal research.
  • Ability to interpret statutes, regulations, and other legal documents and communicate the content of those documents to non-legal counterparts.
  • Ability to exercise mature and reliable judgment and the flexibility and enthusiasm to work on challenging and new projects.
  • Willingness to develop new areas of expertise and solve a wide variety of problems both within and outside of your comfort zone.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously under limited supervision with efficiency and considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Position Qualifications:

  • J.D. required; current active license in Illinois or California, or ability to promptly become licensed, in Illinois or California.
  • Three to five (3-5) years of prior legal experience with a law firm or in-house legal department.
  • Significant direct experience interacting with and advising clients.
  • Experience conducting legal and compliance research.
  • Interest in higher education and higher education law.
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends, and travel when needed.

Compensation & Benefits

This opportunity is budgeted at $100,000 - 125,000 base compensation. Additional compensation factors may impact total compensation.
