Job Summary

The Assistant General Counsel supports the General Counsel in ensuring that the business and governmental practices of the CRVA are in compliance with current law.

Essential Job Duties

The position has two essential functions: (1) support the General Counsel regarding all legal issues involved in the operation of the businesses managed by CRVA, and (2) support the General Counsel regarding all legal issues involved in the governmental operation of the CRVA as a North Carolina public authority.

Corporate Legal Support

  • Provide legal support for all functions of corporate operations, including providing legal support and meeting the legal needs of convention center operation, entertainment/sports facility operation and museum operation.
  • Working with General Counsel, negotiate and draft documents between CRVA and customers, vendors, and event organizers and provide assistance for the CRVA staff negotiating agreements for facility operations and city-wide opportunities. Identify issues and provide advice during negotiations.
  • Participate in development, implementation and maintenance of policies, practices and procedures that impact CRVA and its operating facilities and departments.
  • Work with outside counsel, as needed, to provide support for CRVA operations and litigation.
  • Provide legal support regarding employment practices and labor issues.
  • Provide general legal interpretation, direction and guidance on construction documents and process.
  • Assist risk management policies and practices to protect the interests of the organization and minimize organization financial exposure regarding anticipated and identified risks.
  • Document management and organization.

Governmental Legal Support

Primary responsibility regarding administrative functions of the CRVA Board of Directors, including scheduling meetings, preparing agendas, attending meetings, working with staff to prepare meeting materials, supporting Executive Leadership Team member presentations to Board of Directors, and preparing minutes following meetings.

• Provide corporate communication and messaging to Board of Directors.

• Responsible for proficiency in North Carolina laws on public governance and monitoring changes in law.

• Primary responsibility for new board member orientation, working with members of Executive Leadership Team.

• Work with City Clerk’s office to ensure compliance with City of Charlotte board requirements for appointment, attendance and reporting.

• Maintain and update board procedures and policies. Monitor and enforce City of Charlotte procedures and policies applicable to Board of Directors.

• Maintain relationships with City Attorney’s office regarding Board of Directors operations and matters.

• Assist and advise staff regarding government purchasing practices and policies for expenditure of public funds, including requests for proposal.

• Assist staff and General Counsel with Public Records requests, and support CEO and communications staff in responses.

• Review and provide guidance regarding city, state and federal legislation; provide legal opinion and interpretation; assist with compliance issues.

Education and Experience; Skills Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA), with license to practice law in North Carolina.
  • Preference five years or more experience practicing law.
  • Must have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with ability to think creatively to solve problems.
  • Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills
