The Clinical Supervising Attorney will work together with the JIFS Clinic Director to represent over 40 JIFS clients and supervise clinic students work representing clients, and participate in co-teaching the required JIFS Clinic course.

Primary Responsibilities

1. Responsible for working with the Director to represent JIFS clients and ensure the effective management of JIFS Clinics educational and public service missions. Supervise student representation of clients, including supervising drafting and filing of motions, petitions and discovery, investigation of case facts, preparation for court appearances and oral argument, and representation of clients at parole hearings. During periods of student absence, the supervising attorney will be entirely or partially responsible for client representation, including communication with clients, court preparation, drafting and interfacing with counsel.

2. Partner with the JIFS Clinic Director to develop and execute outreach strategies and build relationships with the communities served while maintaining own caseload.

3. The Supervising Attorney will assist the Director in teaching the course(s) required for students who are enrolled in the JIFS clinic.

4. Partner with the JIFS Clinic Director to participate in fundraising activities as directed by the Executive Director of the Center for Juvenile Law & Policy.

5. Some evening and occasional weekend hours will be required.

6. Extensive travel will be required, particularly to California penal facilities.

7. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Experience

Licensed to practice law in the state of California for a minimum of two years to be eligible to supervise students.

Minimum five years experience of relevant law practice experience. Experience in clinical program during law school and other relevant experience may be considered.

Demonstrated desire to mentor, supervise, and train law students in an in-house clinical program. Prior teaching and/or supervision experience is preferred, but not required.

Experience in post-conviction legal representation is preferred, including resentencing, juvenile transfer hearings, criminal appeals, felony murder litigation and parole.

Possess tenacity and dedication, a successful track record of working effectively with diverse and vulnerable client populations, and a demonstrated commitment to social justice. Writing skills are essential, including a commitment to effective written advocacy. Strong organizational and time management skills are essential. Professionalism is paramount, including an ability to manage multiple tasks, work independently, and seek guidance when appropriate.

Reasonable expected salary range: $90,000-$100,000

$66,560.00 - $87,776.00 Salary commensurate with education and experience.
