The Initial Appearance Attorney is responsible for handling cases for the Maricopa County Attorneys Office in the Initial Appearance Court. Duties include reviewing felony matters to ensure that booking paperwork establishes probable cause, working with law enforcement agencies to correct booking problems, arguing for appropriate release conditions, and helping victims assert their rights. In addition, attorneys assist police officers as requested. Attorneys will also review cases for charging decisions and respond to motions as directed. Initial Appearance Attorneys work 12-hour shifts working one full week (Monday to Sunday) and having the next full week off. Shifts begin at 6 PM and 6 AM. This recruitment seeks to fill a nighttime position, 6 PM to 6 AM.
This recruitment is used to fill Prosecutor levels I II positions. The level and compensation offered will be based on the education and experience provided on the application.
Prosecutors hired at a level I will be compensated at a range of $77,500.00 - $95,742.40
Prosecutors hired at a level II will be compensated at a range of $90,500.00 - $130,500.00 and must have a minimum of three years of directly applicable experience or six years minimum experience as an attorney in an unrelated field.

We Require
Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited and American Bar Association (ABA) approved law school
Other Requirements
Must be admitted to practice law and a member in good standing with the State Bar of Arizona at the time of hire
Valid Arizona driver's license upon hire
Must obtain ACJIS Terminal Operator Certification within six months of hire or promotion and maintain certification throughout the course of this assignment
May require on-call/overtime availability to provide a response to after-hour inquiries and notification alerts
May be required to testify in court proceedings
May be required to travel to perform certain work functions
Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance

Job Contributions
Review Initial Appearance Court calendars to select cases of interest to MCAO
Review booking paperwork on cases of interest to MCAO or as directed by the judicial officer to ensure it establishes probable cause for the booked offense
Coordinate with law enforcement agencies to address problems with booking paperwork
Review risk assessments, criminal history, and the facts of the crime to make appropriate release recommendations to the judicial officer
Appear in court to argue for appropriate release conditions as needed
Assist law enforcement with general legal questions and/or general booking procedures
Assist victims in asserting their rights at the initial appearance
Review and charge felony drug possession cases as assigned
Review and respond to motions in felony cases as assigned
Comply with all rules regulating professional responsibility
Cover court and other duties as assigned
Working Conditions
Office and courtroom settings in high-volume, fast-paced environments with frequent stressful situations
May require long periods of sitting while completing paperwork, standing and moving about during the course of performing duties
Ability to travel to and from various county locations for court appearances, meetings and trainings, utilizing personal or county-owned vehicle
Ability to move up to 20 pounds
