Responsibilities

  • You will serve as a disciplinary counsel in routine and complex proceedings and handle appeals to the Administrative Law Court.
  • You will perform extensive trial preparation, prepare witnesses for testimony, organize documents and other evidence for presentation, and research, and be ready to respond to predictable legal issues.
  • You will perform substantive legal research into various aspects of professional practices related to disciplinary actions.
  • You will prepare and respond to legal motions, orders, and other preliminary and post-trial legal actions and negotiate and prepare settlement documents to resolve disciplinary matters.
  • You will assess the legal sufficiency of requests for temporary suspension orders, orders for evaluation, injunctions, and other preliminary actions.
  • You will maintain accurate, complete, and updated files in the Agencys case management system.
  • You will assist investigators and other Agency personnel with the preparation and completion of the investigation of cases


Minimum Qualifications

  • A juris doctor degree or its equivalent from an accredited law school and experience as a practicing attorney.
  • Member of the SC Bar.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3 years experience as a practicing attorney.
  • Completion of Rule 403 requirements.
  • Knowledge of SC laws, the Administrative Procedures Act, judicial and quasi-judicial procedures and rules of evidence, and general case, statutory, and common law.
  • Considerable knowledge of SC laws, general cases, and statutory and common law.
  • Knowledge of the policies, standards, and procedures of the Attorney Generals office.
  • Ability to interpret and apply laws in court decisions.
  • Ability to analyze facts, evidence, and legal instruments.
  • Ability to express conclusions and arguments clearly and logically.
  • Ability to perform research and to understand aspects of professional practices as related to disciplinary proceedings.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

Other Requirements

  • Position works in an office environment with extended periods of sitting and standing.
  • May require occasional work outside of normal office hours.
  • Occasional overnight travel and weekend assignments.
