Our Assistant City Attorney I - Prosecution (Part-Time) prosecutes cases in Municipal Court and performs extra duties and responsibilities assigned by
the City Attorney.

The salary range for this position is $48.45 to $67.83 per hour, and the hiring range is $48.45 to $58.14 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience.

This is a part-time position, working 20 hours per week.

Essential Functions

  • Prosecutes cases in Municipal Court, which includes meeting with defendants and their attorneys; meeting with police officers, code enforcement officials, witnesses and victims; responding to written motions of defendants; processing and preparing cases for trial; presenting cases in jury trials and trials to the court; researching the law.
  • Performs professional legal work carrying the highest levels of volume, complexity, consequence, autonomy and responsibility. Regularly drafts motions, proposed orders, and other court documents.
  • Represents the City in prosecuting Municipal Code violations.
  • Keeps the City Attorney, or a direct supervisor, regularly informed of matters being handled as required by the City Attorney.

Other Job Functions: Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education: A law degree from an ABA-accredited U.S. law school.

Experience:

Required: Minimum of one year experience in criminal and/or administrative prosecution.

Preferred: Experience in other areas of municipal law.

Certifications

  • Must be licensed to actively practice law in the State of Colorado and be in good standing with the Colorado Supreme Court.
  • Must possess a valid Drivers License.

  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically with co-workers, the Municipal Judge, City Council, defendants and their attorneys, and the general public.
  • Must possess a good working knowledge of Colorado Municipal Court Rules and the Colorado Rules of Evidence.
  • General knowledge of the law.
  • General knowledge of City organization and operations.
  • Skilled in legal writing and research.
  • Ability to participate in team problem solving.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to use word processing and presentation software, and to do on-line legal research.
  • Ability to work independently in protecting the legal interests of the City and in supporting the goals and objectives of the City Council, City Manager and City Attorney.
  • Ability to perform with integrity; demonstrate honesty and sensitivity to ethical issues; and avoid actual or apparent impropriety and/or conflicts of interest.
  • Exercise appropriate judgment, often under pressure, consistent with the highest levels of volume, complexity, consequence, autonomy and responsibility attending the position.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff and officials, co-workers and the public, and deal with problems timely, effectively, courteously and tactfully.

Physical Demands

Frequent: Minimal physical effort typically found in clerical work. Primarily sedentary, may occasionally lift and carry light objects. Walking and/or standing as needed and minimal.

Working Environment

Frequent: Exposure to routine office noise and equipment.
Occasional: Exposure to hazards typically found in general office environments where there is rarely to no exposure to injury or accident.

Additional Working Demands / Conditions

  • Requires much mental effort, study and concentration, and often under pressure of time and adverse consequences of error or failure.
  • Working early morning, evening, holiday and weekend hours is sometimes required.
  • Regularly required to talk and hear and the demands on the visual senses are very high.
  • Frequently required to stand and walk.
  • Required to reach with hands and arms and occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
