Represents the City in legal matters and provides advisory legal services to City departments. Manages all aspects of State and Federal litigation, regulatory investigations, and claims on behalf of the City involving employment disputes, contractual disputes, commercial litigation, environmental claims, and personal injury damages. Reviews and modifies contracts, secures insurance, completes insurance applications, and negotiates economic development agreements. Coordinates the monitoring, evaluation, implementation, and reporting of City grants.
  • Investigates assigned litigated claims and complaints against the City and recommends appropriate action.
  • Oversees regulatory compliance activities including regulatory filings for Federal and State grants, funds, and services; performs compliance risk assessments, trend analysis, and best practice recommendations to division heads.
  • Serves as in house counsel by answering questions and reviewing comments from multiple departments.
  • Meets with citizens regarding issues/concerns and proposes resolutions; provides legal advice as appropriate.
  • Reviews exceptions to model agreements/contracts to be made or entered into by the City.
  • Assist in preparing, reviewing, and drafting ordinances, resolutions, and motions.
  • Performs related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Required Education and Experience

  • Juris doctor from an accredited law school
  • One to three years of related work experience in municipal defense and municipal law
  • Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities

Required Licenses or Certifications

  • Possession of license to practice law in the State of Louisiana
