The Opportunity:
Brkthru’s continued success hinges, in part, on our ability to nimbly navigate the legal risks and opportunities inherent in our industry by providing timely, practical, and creative advice to our business leaders. The successful candidate will apply their years of legal experience to assist our business leaders in continuing to grow Brkthru. This newly created role at Brkthru will report to the EVP of Business Strategy & Legal and will be a highly visible position among Brkthru’s senior leadership.

Location:
We will only consider applicants who currently reside in the State of Michigan, with a preference given to the Metro Detroit area. This is a fully remote role with court and internal business travel required, as-needed.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide practical, creative legal advice in a fast-paced, high growth environment.
  • Draft, review, negotiate and revise various legal instruments and documents, including terms and conditions, contracts and leases.
  • Regularly interact with business leadership team on a wide range of business and legal matters to help them understand, assess and appropriately respond to business risks.
  • Work closely with HR team to proactively address employment related issues.
  • Represent company in less complex litigation matters, when needed.
  • Conduct research and analysis of specific legal questions and scenarios and prepare a legally sound and succinct response.
  • Draft internal policies and assist with implementation, where needed.
  • Primary responsibility for developing, implementing and maintaining a contract management system.
  • Support the development and implementation of innovative ways to scale legal processes.
  • Competently handle other legal matters when directed.
  • Regularly review relevant state and federal laws to ensure company’s compliance.
  • Manage outside legal counsel, when needed.
  • Review legal publications and pending legislation to advise senior leadership of changes which may impact the company.

Requirements:

  • A minimum of 7 years of progressive experience with general corporate and litigation matters with a reputable law firm, with some in-house experience a plus.
  • Juris Doctor from an accredited U.S. based law school.
  • Current admission to, and in good standing with, the State Bar of Michigan.
  • Litigation experience is a must, including significant experience drafting pleadings, preparing written discovery, conducting depositions, mediation and motion practice. Some trial experience is preferable, but not required.​
  • Superior oral and written communication skills, including experience with communicating directly with senior business executives.
  • Advanced level experience with contract review, drafting and negotiations.
  • Knowledge of various labor and employment laws in the United States.
  • Effective time management skills, demonstrated by the ability to prioritize and exercise sound judgment in ambiguous situations and under tight timelines.
  • Ability to provide legal advice which is practical and actionable while keeping business objectives at the forefront.
  • Collaborative, team-oriented attitude.
  • Experience with managing outside legal counsel.
  • Proven ability to work independently and multi-task.
  • Understanding of budgets, forecasting and financial statements.
  • Experience working within the traditional or digital media industry is highly desirable, but not required.
  • This is a fully remote role with court and internal business travel required, as-needed.

Benefits:

  • Compensation commensurate with experience between $135,000 - $170,000 plus up to 10% bonus
