We are seeking a Tax Counsel to support the delivery of high value, comprehensive, accurate and timely tax advice to our business partners including finance, HR, operations, product and government relations. Responsibilities to include reinsurance transactions, M&A and investments. The position reports directly to the SVP, Head of Tax and Assistant General Counsel.

***this is an onsite/hybrid position in Des Moines, Iowa

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Tax planning to manage GAAP ETR, cash taxes and managing deferred tax assets.
  • Negotiate tax provisions in transactional documents and articulate tax risks.
  • Assist in negotiating reinsurance treaties.
  • Research and develop AELs tax positions.
  • Assist in minimize tax withholding.
  • Assist in reviewing 10-Q/K MD&A and tax footnote, tax returns and other non-US filings.
  • Assist in the development, feasibility modeling and implementation of the Companys global tax strategy.
  • Performs other related work as assigned.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • J.D.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience at a nationally recognized law or accounting firm.
  • M preferred.
  • Experience in life insurance preferred
  • Transactional tax and planning work including partnership rules and experience negotiating tax provisions of transactional documents.
  • Managing tax audits
  • Technical and operational knowledge of applicable federal and state tax laws
  • GAAP 10-Q/K and statutory reporting
  • Federal, state and international tax planning
  • World wide income tax treaties

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, PROFESSIONAL DESIGNATIONS:

Good standing with a state bar or current plan to be admitted to a state bar.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to perform technical tax research using multiple resources.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
  • Strong analytical, organizational and planning skills with attention to detail.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with ability to define practical problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and successfully with employees, customers, and external advisors.
  • Ability to successfully handle pressure and meet deadlines in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Travel is not required in this position.
