Description:

This Associate General Counsel position will be responsible for handling a variety of labor matters, including contract administration, grievances, and arbitrations; general litigation such as review, analyze, and respond to discovery requests, prepare court filings, e-filing, prepare witnesses and conduct depositions, engage in motion practice, and make court appearances as necessary; handle administrative agency matters, mediations, and investigations; support the chief compliance officer; draft and negotiate goods and services, commercial, and construction agreements; prepare legal memorandums; and handle a variety of other matters as directed by the General Counsel. One of the fundamental obligations of the position is an awareness and understanding of the obligations The Juilliard School has as a tax-exempt educational organization so that appropriate legal advice and representation are provided.

The expected salary range for this position is $180,000 to $187,000.

The salary is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization, and scope of experience. General Qualifications:

  • A desire to join a mission driven higher education institution and in-house legal and compliance operation
  • Broad knowledge of New York not-for-profit and education laws
  • Experience in government or non-profit institution or the equivalent
  • Experience appearing before administrative agencies and the courts
  • The ability to communicate and collaborate with stakeholders to find solutions and address the risk landscape
  • The ability to works collaboratively with others in a team
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to multi-task and manage multiple matters at once
  • Excellent judgment and the ability to balance legal risks with business strategy
  • The highest level of integrity and attention to client service
  • The ability to establish relationships with the various constituencies
  • A deep appreciation of the performing arts and a dedication to providing the highest caliber performing arts education

Required Qualifications:

  • A J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school and New York State bar admission
  • 5+ years of experience
  • Professional experience providing legal services to non-profit organizations, institutions of higher education, or cultural organizations is strongly preferred.
