A day in the life

The In-House Legal Counsel is responsible for providing professional legal support affecting the company, its administrative and operational departments, and its affiliated companies. This position will be primarily responsible for drafting and reviewing reviews contracts, and may also handle subrogation, assesses legal risk in contracts and health insurance issues, provides legal guidance and interpretations, and supports the management of litigation and use of outside counsel.

Your responsibilities will include

  • Provides expert and timely legal support in assigned areas to all departments of the company and its affiliates in a manner that enhances ongoing operations while protecting the interests of the corporation, including, but not limited to, the review and interpretation of state and federal statutes, rules, regulations, and case law.
  • Reviews and interprets state and federal statutes and regulations that impact the corporation, including identifying areas of potential legal liability, investigating facts and operational systems considering legal and regulatory requirements, reviewing policies and law applicable to business operations, and drafting and communicating effective solutions or responses as necessary.
  • Researches and recommends corporate course of action in accidental, medical malpractice, and occupational injury claims through resolution and settlement of these claims involving other party liability.
  • Provides legal support and review of contracts utilized for business operations including drafting, reviewing, and commenting on complex agreements. Reviews proposed state and federal statutes and regulations.
  • As requested, assists internal attorneys in managing litigation and conferring with outside counsel and other consultants in providing factual and/or legal responses, discovery, and other documentation to facilitate favorable resolution of disputes, or otherwise working with outside counsel and other consultants in implementing matters involving legal matters into business operations.
  • When necessary, acts as an intermediary between the corporation and regulators and other outside parties including federal and state agencies, auditors, and customer consultants and representatives.

What you need to succeed

  • Juris Doctorate degree.
  • 3-5 years of experience in the practice of law in a law firm or corporate legal department.
  • ND license to practice law or ability to obtain a ND license prior to hire.
  • Ability to collaborate with a consultative approach when working with internal customers.
  • Excellent formal written communication skills.
  • Pays close attention to the details of all work and strives for a high level of quality work.

Equivalent combination of education, experience or training determined to be acceptable by Human Resources may be substituted, unless regulated by contract or program standards
