This role will be based in our Urbandale, IA office. We offer a hybrid work schedule with 4 days in the office; and 1 day remote where it makes sense to do so.

Responsibilities

The Senior Counsel provides an array of legal services to internal clientele and assists the Associate General Counsel with day-to-day oversight of the legal affairs of the organization. In this position, the Senior Counsel will provide research, advice, and other assistance as requested. In this role you may also provide counsel to management and other employees within the company, other W. R. Berkley operating units and coordinate with outside legal counsel as required. We'll trust you to operate with a high degree of inherent discretion and decision-making confidence.

We'll count on you to:

  • Research and analyze the law on complex issues and prepares briefings on such matters for the Associate General Counsel, management and employees as required.
  • Bear full accountability for service of specific internal clients on both routine and specific basis.
  • Serve as policy language resource for drafting and product review. Assist in the drafting and revision of policy language.
  • Review company work product to assure compliance with applicable law and to reduce legal risk.
  • Manage company regulation matters including consumer complaints and statutory company compliance matters as assigned by Associate General Counsel.
  • Have knowledge of general corporate law and business formation, including related regulatory filings, is a plus.
  • Monitor, research, and update company leadership and staff on material changes to local, State and Federal laws.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities including periodic management of special projects and the supervision of other departmental staff as assigned by the Associate General Counsel.

Qualifications

What you need to have:

  • Be a licensed attorney able to practice in the state of Iowa; or eligible to become one within 30 days of employment.
  • Bachelors Degree from an accredited university, and a law degree from an American Bar Associated Accredited law school
  • 5+ years of relevant work experience
  • Ability to effectively communicate with a diverse group of constituents (verbal and written)
  • Possess an understanding of the insurance business including commercial lines property and casualty products and the various laws and regulations impacting the business of the company
  • Strong legal research skills
  • Operate with urgency and thrive in high pressure situations without sacrificing quality or accuracy
  • Demonstrate a commitment to detailed accurate work product, excellent organizational skills, flexibility
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office suite
  • Ability to build and sustain effective professional relationships throughout the organization as well as key third party resources and stakeholders
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and attorney client privilege
