We are excited to announce an opportunity to join our team here at the City of Commerce City. We are currently seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Assistant City Attorney who will provide a wide range of professional legal work to the city with limited supervision and direction. The primary focus of this role will be on the Police Department and public safety activities.

Our ideal candidate will have an extensive knowledge of federal, state, and local laws applicable to law enforcement, law enforcement liability, the operation of a law enforcement agency, criminal justice records, and public records. As a Senior Assistant City Attorney, you will provide comprehensive, timely, and sound legal advice to the Police Department and other municipal clients as assigned in matters relating to official duties.

In this position, you will have the opportunity to draft, review, and update Police Department policies and procedures, advise the Department on responding to subpoenas and records requests, and represent the Police Department and Records Custodian in court and court filings as necessary.

As a valued member of our team, you will also investigate or monitor legal claims against the city arising from law enforcement activities, attend and participate in interagency meetings, and attend conferences as assigned. You will also provide in-service training to the Police Department and other clients on federal, state, and local law matters and participate in collaborative discussions with area police legal advisors and external partner agencies and organizations.

This position requires a hybrid schedule of three days in the office and two remote days. However, this is subject to change based on the department's and organization's needs.



Hiring salary is dependent upon experience.
The hiring range for this position is $91,028 - $122,888/annual.

Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school and licensed to practice law in the State of Colorado within 60 days of hire. At least five years experience as a practicing attorney is required; eight years experience including work for municipal government or work in a required field of specialty is preferred. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered. Must possess a valid drivers license or be able to arrange for timely transportation to alternate work locations.

Knowledge of:
  • Principles and procedures of municipal, state, federal, civil, business, and constitutional law.
  • Charter, ordinances, codes, policies, procedures, practices, and activities of the City.
  • Any required legal specialty of the position.
  • Colorado Rules of Professional Conduct, judicial procedures and rules of evidence.
  • Techniques and resources for conducting legal research.
Skills in:
  • Proven conflict resolution and mediation skills.
  • Reviewing, reading, interpreting, and clearly explaining facts, abstract concepts, and law to a variety of audiences.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong time and task management skills.
Ability to:
  • Analyze and organize conflicting and ambiguous facts and evidence.
  • Read, interpret, and analyze complex legal documents.
  • Show discretion to respond effectively to sensitive inquiries.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with officials, employees, and the public.
  • Advocate legal positions on behalf of the City.
