The Staff Attorney, under the direct supervision of the Director of Legal Services, provides quality civil legal assistance to Pascua Yaqui tribal members; conduct outreach and community education activities to increase access to justice.
  1. Conduct regular intake of applicants to ascertain the nature of the applicant's legal problem and develop a course of action to resolve those legal problems.
  2. Provide a range of civil legal assistance that is appropriate to the client's legal problem.
  3. Maintain client files on a database that contain detailed information of the work performed in the case and the outcome of the matter.
  4. Conduct outreach and community education on a regular basis to inform client base about the legal services offered by the program to provide them with information that will help handle legal issues on their own or to prevent legal problems from occurring.
  5. Coordinate services with local, social service providers to provide a comprehensive response to the needs of clients with complex and multiple needs.
  6. Prepare own legal pleadings and correspondence on computer.
  7. Copy and distribute pleadings to appropriate parties in litigation.
  8. Maintain professional conduct that conforms to the standards established by the Arizona State Bar and the Pascua Yaqui Tribe.
  9. Perform other duties of a similar nature or level as requested by supervisor or director.
Knowledge of:
  • Principles and practices of relevant civil law;
  • Court procedures and administrative proceedings;
  • Legal issues affecting Native Americans;
  • Yaqui culture, customs, resources and traditions and/or a willingness to learn.
Skills and Abilities:
  • Principles and practices of relevant civil law;
  • Court procedures and administrative proceedings;
  • Legal issues affecting Native Americans;
  • Operate a variety of office equipment, including a computer and related software applications;
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with co-workers, supervisor, management, Council members, and the public. Have ability to sufficiently exchange or convey information and receive verbal and written work instructions.
Have a Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school.
AND
  • Two (2) years of litigation experience preferred, but not required;
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred, but not required.
Special Requirements
  • Admittance to the Arizona State Bar and maintain a current license;
  • Admittance to the Pascua Yaqui Bar or willingness to become admitted by taking the next available PYT Bar Exam;
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver's License;
  • This position will require the incumbent to work non-traditional hours, nights, and weekends.
