Hino Motors Manufacturing U.S.A., Inc. is seeking an Attorney for it's corporate office in Novi, Michigan. This position is a generalist role within the Legal Department and will report directly to the General Counsel. The Assistant General Counsel (“AGC”) or Legal Counsel (“LC”) (depending on experience) is a licensed attorney who will be primarily responsible for providing research, advice, and other legal assistance to the General Counsel, other members of management, and coordinating matters with outside legal counsel. The AGC / LC will specialize in transactional work and labor & employment law and provide legal coverage to other substantive legal areas such as international trade. The AGC / LC will also work closely with the General Counsel in managing the Legal Department’s affairs, calendar, budget, succession plan, and department staff.

Responsibilities include:

  • Consulting with all levels of management, outside legal counsel, accountants, and other advisors
  • Meeting with internal clients and external business partners
  • Preparing reports, memorandums, and similar business documents
  • Analyzing, editing, negotiating, and drafting complex commercial agreements such as supplier agreements and construction agreements
  • Advising and consulting on labor and employment matters
  • Overseeing assigned compliance matters
  • Keeping appraised of automotive industry-specific regulations and legal trends and ensuring appropriate risk management strategies are in place
  • Developing company policies on specific issues and matters of corporate governance
  • Miscellaneous duties assigned by and in support of the General Counsel, such as managing litigation or management of legal proceedings such as a mediation

Education/Experience/Skill Requirements:

  • Law Degree from an ABA accredited law school and admitted to practice in good standing in Michigan or the ability to obtain membership in a reasonable amount of time
  • Absence of negative disciplinary history concerning law license
  • 7-10 years of practice experience with a reputable law firm or as an in-house counsel
  • Demonstrated experience in reviewing, researching, drafting and analyzing commercial agreements, including, but not limited to, supplier agreements, construction agreements, non-disclosure agreements and similar transactional documents
  • Strong understanding of state and regulations impacting commercial agreements with a demonstrated ability to interpret and apply the law to complex business situations
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills with the ability to initiate and foster collaborative relationships
  • Adaptable to changing conditions and internal client requirements
  • Highly motivated self-starter and leader of people
