The American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) has an opening for an Associate Counsel position in the Ethics and Legal Affairs Department.

The Associate Counsel is responsible for providing AAMFT members with informal advisory opinions on prospective ethical issues and consultations pertaining to general legal issues. The Associate Counsel manages investigations of ethical complaints against AAMFT members. The Associate Counsel also provides general legal advice and guidance on association issues. The Associate Counsel writes articles for AAMFT members pertaining to ethical matters.

Essential Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Provide members with informal advisory opinions on ethical matters.
  • Provide guidance to members on general legal questions and concerns without giving legal advice.
  • Develop articles and fact sheets for the membership on ethical and legal issues.
  • Maintain knowledge and understanding of the AAMFT Code of Ethics and AAMFT procedures.
  • Conduct the general course of investigations against members accused of ethical violations.
  • Maintain the currency of the ethics databases.
  • Review applications for membership when applicants have disclosed a prior ethical issue.
  • Provide staff support to committee that reviews complaints against members.
  • Provide legal guidance and opinions to staff on association issues.
  • Review contracts and other legal documents on behalf of AAMFT.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and directed.

Qualifications and Skills:

Juris Doctor degree. Licensed to practice law in Virginia or another state. If not licensed to practice law in Virginia, the ability to obtain Virginia Corporate Counsel Certification is desired. Must have strong oral and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects. Ability to interact with members of the public. Acquire knowledge of AAMFT policies, structure, and goals. Ability to investigate, research, and apply facts and policies. Attention to detail is a must. Investigative experience or experience with association ethics codes is beneficial, but not essential. Must pass a background check.
