As the Senior Vice President of Business and Legal Affairs of Epic Records, you will play a critical role in shaping the legal and business strategies of the label. You will lead a team responsible for negotiating, structuring, and executing complex deals related to artist signings, licensing agreements, distribution deals, and other key business arrangements. You will provide strategic guidance to senior leadership on legal matters, ensuring compliance with industry regulations and protecting the interests of Sony Music and its artists at Epic.

This role is based in LA, but open to NYC with willingness to travel.

What you'll do:

  • Legal Counsel and Strategy: Provide expert legal advice and strategic guidance to senior executives on a wide range of business matters, including artist contracts, intellectual property rights, licensing agreements, andcorporate transactions.
  • Deal Negotiation and Structuring: Lead negotiations for deals with artists,brands, and other industry partners. Work with finance team to structure agreements to maximize value for the company while mitigating risks.
  • Contract Drafting and Review: Oversee the drafting, review, and execution of all legal contracts and agreements. Ensure that contractual terms are in line with Sony Music standards and protect the interests of the label.
  • Compliance and Risk Management: Stay abreast of changes in relevant laws and regulations affecting the music industry. Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure compliance with legal requirements and mitigate legal risks.
  • Team Leadership and Development: Manage and mentor a team of legal professionals, providing guidance, support, and professional development opportunities to foster their growth and maximize their performance.
  • Relationship Management: Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with artist attorneys, counterparts at other labels, and other industry stakeholders. Represent the company in all legal matters involving Sony Music corporate including presenting deals for corporate approval.

Who you are:

  • Degree from an accredited law school and active membership in good standing with the relevant state bar
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in entertainment law, with a major focus on the music industry and experience at a major record label.
  • Proven track record of successfully negotiating and structuring complex deals with artists and other industry partners.
  • Strong understanding of intellectual property law, contract law, and industry regulations affecting the music
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and leadership skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to anticipate legal issues and develop proactive solutions to address
  • High level of professionalism, integrity, and discretion in handling sensitive and confidential
  • Ability to keep a calm demeanor while handling multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.

The actual base salary offered depends on a variety of factors, which may include as applicable, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, specific and unique skills, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and the location in which the applicant lives and/or from which they will be performing the job.
New York Pay Range
$300,000$350,000 USD
The anticipated annual base salary does not include any other compensation components or other benefits that an individual may be eligible for. The actual base salary offered depends on a variety of factors, which may include as applicable, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, specific and unique skills, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and the location in which the applicant lives and/or from which they will be performing the job.
