This is a line attorney position within the Litigation Practice Group, Civil Services Division of the Maricopa County Attorneys Office. The focus of this position involves all areas of litigation for Maricopa County, its agencies, and employees in State and Federal Courts. The successful candidate will handle their own caseload defending a variety of cases including 42 U.S.C. 1983, state law tort claims, prosecuting environmental and zoning enforcement matters, and other matters as necessary. The successful candidate will appellate issues that may arise in their cases. The position will also call for working closely with other litigation practice groups while litigating cases and providing clients with advice on litigation strategies and assessments of liabilities.

We Require
Successful candidates must possess a Juris Doctorate (Professional) degree from an ABA-accredited law school
Three years of experience in civil litigation with experience litigating cases in state and federal court, as well as state and federal appeals courts
Valid Arizona drivers license upon hire
Successful candidates must be admitted to practice law and be in good standing with the State Bar of Arizona at the time of application
Note: The Maricopa County Attorney's Office requires a thorough background check of all successful candidates and is authorized to test prospective employees for the presence of illegally accessed drugs. Drug testing is conducted once an offer has been extended and before placement

Preference may be given to those with prior experience practicing law in a government setting and to those with direct civil litigation experience in federal and state court
Job Contributions
Conduct legal research and analyze legal issues using both computerized legal research and hard copy tools
Handle a broad spectrum of civil litigation matters including civil rights claims, excessive force, deliberate indifference claims, state law torts, and many other claims
Assist appellate group when needed with writing and editing appellate briefs.
Draft reports and status updates, motions, and various other court documents as necessary, as well as legal advice memorandum
Represent clients virtually and in person at status conferences, oral arguments on motions, evidentiary hearings, and other hearings as set by the Court, and at trial
Provide litigation risk analysis and status reports to the Practice Group Leader, the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, the Maricopa County Risk Manager, and clients on all cases and matters assigned
Responsible for compliance with the continuing legal education requirements and other requirements imposed by the State Bar of Arizona
Working Conditions
Office and courtroom settings in high-volume, fast-paced environment with frequent stressful situations
May require long periods of sitting while completing paperwork, standing, and moving about during the course of performing duties
Ability to travel to and from various county locations for court appearances, meetings, and training, utilizing personal or county-owned vehicles
Ability to move up to 20 pounds
