Job Description

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The mission of the New York Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The NYPD strives to foster a safe city by incorporating Neighborhood Policing into all facets of Department operations, and solve the problems that create crime and disorder through an interdependent relationship between people and its police, and by pioneering strategic innovation.

The New York City Police Department's Legal Training Unit serves as the primary liaison with the NYPD Training Bureau. The Unit provides general and personalized training to uniformed members of the service on how to thoroughly prepare for delivering courtroom testimony as well as on topics essential to crime fighting strategies. The Unit provides training to various investigative and operational commands and advises on criminal law as well as new legislation affecting uniformed members of the service.

The Legal Training Unit reports directly to the Assistant Commissioner, Criminal Matters.

The Agency Attorneys, III will:
1. Conduct specialized and personalized training to uniformed members of the service on the deliverance of courtroom testimony, interview preparation, as well as on critical criminal procedure topics such as search and seizure, warrant
executions, right lo counsel, and custodial interrogations;
2. Advise members of the service on changes to relevant criminal laws and emerging trends;
3. Provide legal advice to members of the service in real-time on a variety of criminal law matters either in-person or via telephone;
4. In coordination with other unit members, communicate and coordinate with the NYPD Risk Management Bureau in order to be made aware of compliance issues and tailor and enhance trainings accordingly;
5. Liaise with personnel from the NYPD Training Bureau on training matters and be responsible for scheduling and conducting regular training sessions when requested.

Qualifications

1. Admission to the New York State Bar; and either "2" or "3" below.
2. One year of satisfactory United States legal experience subsequent to admission to any state bar; or
3. Six months of satisfactory service as an Agency Attorney Interne (30086).
Incumbents must remain Members of the New York State Bar in good standing for the duration of this employment.
In addition to meeting the minimum Qualification Requirements:
To be assigned to Assignment Level (AL) II, candidates must have one year of experience at Assignment Level I or two years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment. To be assigned to AL III candidates must have two years of experience in Assignment Levels I and/or II or three years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment.
