That litigation can arise in federal or state courts nationwide and typically includes business to business disputes, real estate, environmental, insurance coverage, and personal injury matters. Verizons commercial litigation practice involves a significant component of investigating, counseling, and managing threatened claims and disputes that may be resolved before litigation is brought.

This position requires an experienced and motivated attorney with excellent judgment, strong communication skills, and the ability to handle a wide range of issues in high stakes matters. While you will work with outside counsel on some matters, this role is not merely a manager of outside counsel. This is a hands on position in which you will be responsible for drafting and preparing filings and other litigation work product, discovery, strategy, settlement negotiations, and occasional stand-up work.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Being a generalist who can get up to speed quickly and effectively on diverse matters; you should have a strong desire to handle a significant docket of matters that vary widely in subject matter, complexity, and significance for Verizon.

  • Preparing for and managing both affirmative and defensive litigation at all levels and at various stages, including but not limited to pre-filing assessments, complaints and answers, motions practice, discovery, mediation / dispute resolution, trial, and appeal.

  • Conducting internal investigations and address corresponding litigation risks and/or compliance concerns.

  • Evaluating and managing significant financial, strategic, and reputational risks to Verizon while eliciting input from key internal stakeholders and communicating effectively with senior management.

  • Sharing and integrating lessons learned in litigation and government investigations to continuously improve company practices.

  • Analyzing and providing input on best practices to avoid litigation and compliance risk.

  • Maintaining strategic relationships and lines of communications with key stakeholders to respond to emerging threats.

  • Engaging and closely supervising outside counsel, with the ability to drive efficient pricing with law firms on terms other than hourly billing that meets the companys diversity goals.

  • Collaborating effectively and respectfully with colleagues across the company.

  • Strong litigation experience.

Even better if you have one or more of the following:

  • JD from a top tier law school with strong academic performance.

  • Broad subject matter diversity in your litigation work to date.
