Assistant Counsel (Business Development)

Hours: Normal schedule Monday to Friday - 8:00am to 4:30pm. (40 hours per week)

Salary Range: $125,000.00 - $155,000.00

SUMMARY: Independently provides a wide range of complex legal services in support of the Connecticut Airport Authority’s (CAA) Leasing and Business Development functions. This includes but is not limited to providing advice on a wide range of legal issues, real estate leasing and development, and contracts. The Assistant Counsel will report to the Senior Manager of Business Development.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Provides legal support to the Leasing and Business Development department for all lease and leasing-related matters;
  • Provides advice, analysis and guidance orally and in writing to the General Counsel, Senior Management Team, and CAA departments on complex contract/transactional issues involving major project initiatives, including document review and analysis, and legal research;
  • Drafts lease and operating agreements, lease modifications and amendments, memoranda of understanding, term sheets, policies, procedures and other legal documents;
  • Assists with the enforcement of lease rights and addresses disputes, including construction delays, operational and monetary defaults, mechanics liens, and other commercial landlord/tenant issues;
  • Provides guidance and support in connection with insurance requirements under various types of contracts;
  • Manages the intake of contract requests and conducts client interviews related to contracts;
  • May provide legal support to other CAA Departments in conjunction with or as assigned by the CAA’s General Counsel;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job satisfactorily, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily and independently. The requirements listed below are representative, but not necessarily all-inclusive of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required to successfully perform the duties of this job.

  • Considerable knowledge of state and federal laws;
  • Considerable knowledge of and ability to draft complex legal agreements such as contracts, leases, operating agreements, memoranda of agreement, and term sheets;
  • Considerable legal research skills;
  • Considerable knowledge of legal, compliance and administrative issues;

Considerable ability to deal effectively with others through both oral and written communication;

An individual serving in this position must be able to successfully undergo a thorough background and security screening, including pre-employment drug testing, being fingerprinted, and maintain required security clearance during the duration of employment.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • A juris doctorate degree from an American Bar Association accredited law school;
    Must be a member of the Connecticut Bar or be admitted to practice law in the State of Connecticut within six (6) months of hire;
  • Must have at least five (5) years practicing law in increasingly responsible roles within a law firm or in an in-house capacity including exposure to a wide array of legal matters, with particular emphasis on commercial real estate leasing and development, regulatory compliance, and contracts;
  • Working knowledge of State of Connecticut quasi-public agencies and/or state executive branch agencies;
  • Some experience in aviation, construction and/or insurance law.

COMPUTER SKILLS: Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

WORK HOURS: 40 hours – Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm.

  • Walking throughout the terminal to visit tenants and other business partners;
  • Prolonged sitting and viewing a computer monitor;
