Role Summary/Purpose:

Reporting to the SVP Senior Counsel: Marketing, this position is responsible for providing legal support to the business on new marketing initiatives, supporting Closed End Lending products, providing legal marketing leadership to PayPal and Venmo products and providing expertise to the branding and non-platform marketing teams.

Essential Responsibilities:

Legal Responsibilities and Marketing Reviews

  • Lead legal support for sweepstakes, co-venturer initiatives, branding initiatives, marketing trademark inquiries, corporate marketing and other marketing related initiatives as requested.

  • Provide legal advice to the marketing teams on broad based marketing initiatives and client campaigns requiring specific legal review.

  • Review marketing collateral and create strategic guidance and templates for Closed End lending products, including Pay Later and Ally, across all channels of communications and assess relevant processes for compliance with law/internal policies providing comprehensive feedback.

  • Engage and collaborate with respective outside counsel, client attorney, all functions and subject matter experts, including compliance and risk as required on complex issues.

  • Review/support non-client specific B2B reviews

Client Marketing Team Support

  • Provide and maintain subject matter expertise on PayPal and Venmos loyalty programs, promotions, benefits, and acquisition channels.

  • Provide Legal Marketing expertise to cross functional teams for PayPal and Venmo client marketing initiatives.

Training and Communication

  • Provide advice to client teams on advertising and related credit card and regulatory laws.

  • Influence actions without direct leadership responsibility for teams or processes to build relationships in a cross-matrixed environment (both cross-functionally and cross-business)

  • Develop continuous communication channels with marketing to ensure an understanding of and access to marketing legal requirements and changes in law.

Compliance, Regulatory Support and Special Projects

  • Responsible for keeping up with relevant developments in the industry and law to help formulate business strategies in response to such changes. Integral part of Law Monitoring process.

  • Respond to marketing compliance questions, remediations, audits and support regulatory examinations and other supervisory activities in connection with client marketing activities.

  • Develop, review and revise marketing related Procedures and CTCs, as applicable.

  • Perform other duties and/or special projects as assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Bachelors Degree and Juris Doctorate (JD) with a minimum of 5 years of relevant law firm, in-house or Synchrony legal experience.

  • Working knowledge of relevant federal and state laws and regulations relating to marketing and financial services marketing.

  • Broad perspective and detailed understanding of business systems and processes with the ability to incorporate their impact into the development of effective legal marketing guidelines.

Desired Characteristics:

  • Proven experience requiring strong judgment and ability to understand and balance business/legal considerations.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex initiatives and projects in a matrix environment across multiple business units and to develop guidelines, procedures, tools and templates to manage consistency and compliance across a large and diverse client base.

  • Exceptional communications, relationship building, influencing and collaboration skills demonstrated at all levels of the organization, including senior managers.

Grade/Level: 12

The salary range for this position is 130,000.00 - 210,000.00 USD Annual and is eligible for an annual bonus based on individual and company performance.

Actual compensation offered within the posted salary range will be based upon work experience, skill level or knowledge.

Salaries are adjusted according to market in CA, NY Metro and Seattle.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • You must be 18 years or older

  • You must have a high school diploma or equivalent

  • You must be willing to take a drug test, submit to a background investigation and submit fingerprints as part of the onboarding process

  • You must be able to satisfy the requirements of Section 19 of the Federal Deposit Insurance Act.

  • New hires (Level 4-7) must have 9 months of continuous service with the company before they are eligible to post on other roles. Once this new hire time in position requirement is met, the associate will have a minimum 6 months time in position before they can post for future non-exempt roles. Employees, level 8 or greater, must have at least 18 months time in position before they can post. All internal employees must consistently meet performance expectations and have approval from your manager to post (or the approval of your manager and HR if you dont meet the time in position or performance expectations).
