Employment Counsel Job Description

Job Summary
This position manages a broad range of employment issues involving CSX and provides legal support to Management including the CSX Human Resources Department. Responsibilities include ensuring compliance with federal, state and local laws, providing advice to business partners on various employment issues, working with inside and outside counsel to develop and implement successful legal strategies, and managing matter budgets.


Primary Activities and Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice and guidance on employment-related matters, including hiring, terminations, discrimination, harassment, immigration and wage and hour issues.
  • Collaborate with Human Resources and management to ensure compliance with employment laws
  • Manage Law Department Employment Litigation and Arbitration matters and associated external counsel
  • Assist in drafting and reviewing employment agreements, policies, and procedures
  • Manage legal matter spend, budgets and case reserves
  • Assist in training employees and management on legal matters related to employment
  • Miscellaneous activities and responsibilities as assigned by manager


Minimum Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school
  • Admission to a state bar and in good standing
  • 3 years of experience in Law firm and/or in-house counsel role(s)
  • Experience in handling a wide variety of employment law related matters


Preferred Qualifications

  • 5 or more years of experience in Law firm and/or in-house counsel role(s)
  • 3 years of experience in a wide variety of employment law related matters, including immigration law

Knowledge and Skills

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Solid legal research skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools
  • Ability to work collaboratively with business partners, other lawyers and staff
  • Time management and organizational skills
  • Excellent analytical skills
  • Strong negotiation skills
