The City of Vacaville is accepting applications for the position of Deputy City Attorney I/ Deputy City Attorney II/Assistant City Attorney in the City Attorney's Office.

Currently, one (1) vacancy exists, however, this recruitment will also serve to establish an eligibility list for future vacancies that may occur over the next twelve (12) month period. Candidates can be hired at either level depending on qualifications.

Salary Information:
Deputy City Attorney I: $101,303.24 - $123,134.62
Deputy City Attorney II: $133,631.26 - $162,429.96
Assistant City Attorney
: $173,773.01 - $211,206.71

Deputy/Assistant City Attorneys provide a full range of legal services related to municipal government operations and represent the City in proceedings before courts, boards, arbitrators, mediators, and other administrative agencies. Duties within this position include, but are not limited to:
  • drafting and reviewing a wide range of legal documents, including contracts, ordinances, resolutions, and other legal materials, ensuring compliance with relevant laws;
  • conducting in-depth research and crafting well-informed legal opinions to provide comprehensive guidance on various matters;
  • offering advice and handling legal aspects associated with diverse City functions, such as land use, building regulations, housing, parks and recreation, public works, utilities, human resources, labor, police, fire, and finance;
  • analyzing and providing counsel on key legal frameworks impacting the City, including the Brown Act, conflicts of interest, the Public Records Act, and the California Environmental Quality Act;
  • taking proactive measures to pursue claims on behalf of the City and enforcing the Vacaville Municipal Code;
  • regularly participating in meetings of the Planning Commission, Park and Recreation Commission, and other subordinate bodies, with occasional attendance at City Council meetings;
  • exercising supervisory roles by overseeing the work of other attorneys, support staff, and interns as deemed appropriate; and
  • serving as a dedicated representative of the City Attorney, undertaking assigned responsibilities with diligence and professionalism.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Deputy City Attorney I:
Education: A Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school.

Experience:
Some experience practicing law in a government agency is desirable.

Deputy City Attorney II:
Education:
A Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school.

Experience:
A minimum of three (3) years increasingly responsible professional legal experience as an attorney, including experience in the area of municipal law.

Assistant City Attorney:
Education:
A Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school.

Experience: A minimum of five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience as an attorney in the practice of municipal law, or in combination with experience in a closely related field.

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE

Membership in the State Bar Association of California is a condition of initial and continued employment.
