What youll be doing...

The Compliance CounselGlobal Trade Compliance is responsible for supporting the Verizon Compliance program, focusing on export and import controls and sanctions compliance.

The position is for an experienced lawyer with expertise in export laws, including International Traffic in Arms Regulations, Export Administration Regulations, Executive Orders regarding trade compliance, and U.S. sanctions laws. The Compliance CounselGlobal Trade Compliance will partner closely with Verizons Import Export Compliance Team, International Logistics Services Team, the Supplier Risk Office, and Supply Chain. The position will work with these teams and other Verizon lawyers to provide legal advice to and improve internal controls within Verizons lines of business and administrative functions.

The position reports to the Managing Associate General Counsel Compliance.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Assessing and prioritizing current and emerging risks, their potential impact on Verizon, and develop and implement appropriate controls.

  • Advising on trade compliance laws and monitor changes in the law, including those addressing the provision of goods and software to China and Russia.

  • Working with partners to monitor and enhance appropriate export, import and customs controls regarding Verizons global supply chain and global sales portfolio.

  • Monitoring and enhancing controls for reviewing customers and vendors to ensure compliance with sanctions laws.

  • Preparing and reviewing licenses and other filings necessary to comply with export and sanctions laws.

  • Reviewing, drafting, and managing contractual language relating to export and sanctions law.

  • Monitoring and providing legal advice regarding Verizons international travel policy.

  • Managing trade related investigations, enforcement actions or audits.

  • Performing due diligence and provide advice regarding trade compliance issues for potential M&A activity.

  • Partnering with information technology and information security teams to ensure data and data systems comply with relevant export laws.

  • Serving as a subject matter expert to other attorneys and business leaders.

  • Supporting other compliance and risk management teams.

  • Preparing training regarding export, import, customs and sanctions compliance.

  • Executing and balancing both time-sensitive and longer-term projects, driving them to completion.

What were looking for...

Youll need to have:

  • JD degree (or equivalent) and six or more years of relevant work experience.

  • Admission and good standing in at least one state.

  • Experience before relevant agencies, such as OFAC Commerce Department, Customs and Border Protection, and State Department on sanctions, export, and import issues.

  • Experience reviewing and improving controls to mitigate risk.

Even better to have:

  • Experience working for or supporting a Fortune 50 company.

  • Experience driving complex projects to a successful, timely completion.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Executive presence and ability to effectively manage key stakeholder relationships and influence senior leaders.

  • Strong business acumen with broad understanding of business operations.

  • Ability to successfully prioritize competing demands.

  • OFAC licensing experience.

  • ITAR licensing experience.
