Position Summary
The Division of General Counsel is accepting applications for the position as Associate General Counsel.
Qualifications

Minimum Required Education
Juris Doctorate Degree (J.D) from an accredited law school, and member in good standing of the Mississippi Bar Association.
Minimum Required Experience
  • Three to five (3-5) years of experience across a range of matters pertinent to the position description, and preferably with a knowledge of federal, state, and local laws which affect Higher Education; or two (2) years of experience practicing within a Mississippi public agency law, including public contracting, or where a significant portion of work include providing legal counsel to one or more public institutions of higher learning.
  • Preference for experience in transactional matters related to state agency, procurement, information technology, and intellectual property and research.

Qualifications
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex legal and business issues in terms that are understandable to non-lawyers.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and to complete them effectively and promptly with limited supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to make independent decisions and to ascertain the need for timely escalation of matters to higher management.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Must be able to provide confidential and timely legal advice to the General Counsel and the University to ensure compliance with public laws and the governing bylaws of the Board of Trustees of the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning.
  • Provide advice to the University departments and offices pertaining to various legal issues and obligations that may affect the University including, but not limited to, compliance with state and federal regulations, risk management strategies, transactional actions, and employment law.
  • Analyze legal risks for different courses of action being considered by University personnel.
  • Review contracts and recommend proactive strategies and actions to minimize legal risks and ensure legal compliance.
  • Manage policy and contract management process ensuring compliance with IHL and University policies, and federal and state laws.
  • Review, prepare, and manage investigations, litigation, internal research projects, responses to public records requests, subpoena requests, and other outside requests related to legal matters.
  • Review disciplinary actions for legal compliance in an effort to mitigate any potential legal exposure.
  • Assist with administrative hearings, including internal grievances and hearings before other entities as needed.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with University officials and departments to provide legal education, training, and support.
  • Conduct in-depth legal research and compose memos, policies, letters, or other work product to support the Division of General Counsel.
  • Related duties as assigned by the General Counsel.
