The energy transition continues to disrupt regional commodity markets and with the Americas being a core growth region for the RWE group, RWETA has ambitious expansion plans and seeks highly motivated and experienced professionals to join the NYC-based team.
This is a unique career opportunity to play a key role in the formation of a trading and origination business in a market of strategic importance to a long established, and highly respected international energy trading company that has physical and financial energy markets in its DNA.

Your role

  • As the Legal Counsel Compliance you will play a pivotal role in the setup and day-to-day operations of RWETAs new Americas Trading and Origination business;
  • You will be the dedicated in-house expert and primary point of contact for all regulatory and compliance topics relevant to RWETAs evolving business activities, focused primarily on the trading (via exchange and OTC) of physically and financially settled energy commodity transactions in North America;
  • Oversee the establishment of appropriate licenses, policies and procedures necessary to meet all regulatory & compliance requirements for RWETAs business activities, as well as managing the ongoing monitoring of such requirements and ensuring stringent compliance with all applicable laws, regulations and RWE group internal policies and principles;
  • Maintain, through close liaison with legal colleagues throughout the RWE group, full awareness of any potential regulatory and compliance implications or conflicts arising from RWETAs actual or proposed business activities, consulting with the relevant stakeholders where appropriate.
  • Your activities will require a consistent interface with cross-functional senior management both within RWETA and globally across the wider RWE organization. You will also foster and manage relationships with external legal counsel and other industry contacts or regulators as appropriate and required.
  • Being based in New York City, you will be a core team member of the dynamic NYC-based team of dedicated commercial and business support experts. Youll report into the General Counsel of RWETA.


Your powerful skills

  • Graduated in law, you are licensed to practice law in New York or one of the other U.S. jurisdictions and have substantial relevant experience, working either as outside counsel or inhouse within a comparable trading organization;
  • You have specific experience in the energy sector (5+years), having had exposure to the compliance and regulatory aspects of both physical and financial transactions in power and natural gas trading instruments and the regulatory frameworks of FERC and the CFTC;
  • Preferably you have expert understanding and experience dealing with the regulatory authorities and with independent system operators (ISOs) or regional transmission organizations (RTOs) such as PJM, NYISO, etc.;
  • You are used to advising stakeholders on eye-level, do not shy away from conflict and are confident to defend your position also when challenged;
  • You have exceptional communication skills and proven collaborative, relationship management skills.
  • You are self-motivated, pragmatic, and confident working independently and effectively managing a broad range of complex tasks in a fast-paced environment;.
  • You are excited to work in a role requiring daily in-person collaboration with your colleagues on our state-of-the-art trading floor in central Manhattan.
